ASHEBORO N.C. - The National Weather Service in Raleigh is warning of the possibility of severe weather today including the threat of an isolated tornado. Forecasters at the NWS are saying to expect rain and wind today with a chance of embedded heavier showers and thunderstorms, a couple of which may become severe, during the afternoon and through the evening. While storms are expected to be isolated, forecasters say those that form will be capable of producing damaging straight line wind gusts. Additionally, southerly winds may gust at times between 30 and 35 mph during the afternoon and evening. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on local weather updates throughout the day and stay weather aware. ...

[Scott Pelkey | North State Journal] ASHEBORO N.C. - This week, the Asheboro ABC Board has announced the availability of 1st and 2nd quarter 2023 grant funds for the treatment of alcoholism or substance abuse or for research or education on alcohol or substance abuse.  The grants are a part of a program established by state lawmakers under NC § 18B-805. That statute requires that at least seven percent (7%) of the gross receipts from the stores shall be spent for the treatment of alcoholism or substance abuse, or for research or education on alcohol or substance abuse. Randolph County is the 11th largest county in North Carolina, containing interstates, country roads, forests, lakes, rivers, and creeks. This week, keepers at the North Carolina Zoo are mourning the loss of Natalie, a female southern white rhinoceros who had been at the NC Zoo since 2007. After getting a house fire under control, firefighters work to put out hot spots and overhaul the scene on Friday Jan 13th, 2023. At 1:25 PM on Friday January 13th, 2023, firefighters from Ulah, Westside, and East Side Fire Departments, along with Randolph County EMS were dispatched to a home on Ashbrook View Ln in Asheboro. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:30pm and reported a working fire near the rear of the structure.
