ASHEBORO — Stephen Gainey has been connected to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for a long time. Now, there’s something more for the superintendent of the Randolph County School System. He’s the next president of the NCHSAA, which is the governing organization for sports in public schools in the state. He takes that position July 1. “I love the North Carolina High School Athletic Association,” Gainey said. “I’ve been around it my whole life.” That’s because his father was a former school principal and had advocated for sports. Gainey is no newcomer to the NCHSAA. He has served on the board of directors for four years and most recently had been vice president. ASHEBORO — Asheboro Police says they have charged both parents of the 16-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of Pedro Ortiz-Perez with helping the suspect avoid arrest. On May 23rd, the Asheboro Police Department obtained warrants for the mother and father of the 16-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of Pedro Ortiz-Perez, for aiding the suspect in evading arrest. Pedro Ortiz-Perez, a 16-year-old, who attended Southwest Randolph High School and played on the soccer team, was critically injured in a shooting near North Asheboro Park on May 3rd. He remained in critical condition at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill until he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on May 15th. ASHEBORO — No one was injured and one person was arrested after shots rang out in an Asheboro neighborhood last night. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department, on Friday May 24th, at around 7:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of S. Church St. and W. Wainman Ave. after receiving reports of an armed person and gunshots in the area. 9-1-1 callers and witnesses were able to provide a detailed description and location of the suspect and when officers arrived in the area, they say they observed the suspect running on W. Wainman Ave. behind a business. After a short foot pursuit, officers arrested 18-year-old Kelvin Amad Cook, and recovered a Taurus 9mm handgun, according to the press release. ASHEBORO — The victim of a shooting earlier this month near North Asheboro Park has died, according to police. In a press release earlier today, the Asheboro Police Department said that on May 15th, 2024, the victim,16-year-old Pedro Ortiz-Perez, has passed away. Ortiz-Perez was injured in a shooting on May 3rd near North Asheboro Park and was brought to the Emergency Room at Randolph Hospital by vehicle with a gunshot wound to the jaw/neck. He was later transferred to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill where he had remained in critical condition. On May 3rd, law enforcement agencies in Randolph County received an alert from law enforcement officials out of York County, S.C. that two homicide suspects had left South Carolina and were heading north on I-85. At around 6:17 a.m. emergency crews responded to a single vehicle accident on Providence Church Road near Oxendine Road. ASHEBORO — An Asheboro man has been charged and arrested in connection with a fatal hit and run earlier this month on I-73 near Greensboro. Around 7:30 a.m. on April 17th, 2024, the State Highway Patrol responded to a crash on I-73 south, near West Steeple Chase Road in Guilford County. According to the Highway Patrol, 55-year-old Clyde Strickland, of Raeford, N.C. was walking south on I-73 when he was struck by a vehicle. On Monday, April 22nd, the Highway Patrol was notified by medical staff that Strickland had succumbed to injuries. According to the U.S. Forestry Service's Uwharrie National Forest office, the U.S. Forest Service and the Three Rivers Land Trust conducted a controlled burn of 583 acers today. Smoke from the fire raised questions across social media as it spread across the county.
