Randolph ER Locked Down After Crowd Gathered Following Shooting

ASHEBORO NC (ACME NEWS) – Randolph Hospital’s Emergency Room was briefly placed on lockdown Sunday night after a large crowd gathered at the entrance where a victim was being treated following a shooting.

According to police radio traffic, officers with the Asheboro Police Department at the Emergency Room requested backup to help with controlling a crowd of between 50-100 people growing angry and confrontational. Officers with the Randolph County Sherriff’s Office, Randleman Police Department, and State Highway Patrol responded  emergency traffic. The Randolph County Sherriff’s Office ERT (SWAT) team was alerted with some members also responded to the hospital.

Randolph County 911 received several calls about individuals who were possibly armed in the parking lot. Radio traffic and later information released by officials indicated there were severs subjects who were observed passing around a small handgun in the crowd. Photojournalist on scene at the ER did not witness any arrest or confrontations and the crowd dispersed after the victim was airlifted.

Acme News is aware of reports on social media that there was an active shooter at the hospital. We have not at this time seen any information that would lead us to believe those reports are accurate, but are still awaiting information from Randolph Hospital as well as Asheboro PD.

We have reached out to the Asheboro Police Department for details about the shooting and events around the hospital lockdown but had not heard back at the time of publication.
