ASHEBORO N.C. – Last month the City of Asheboro made changes to the Social District downtown. Here is what you need to know.
The Zoo City Social District is a special area in historic downtown Asheboro where visitors carry and consume alcoholic beverages in outdoor public spaces during specified times, so long as the beverages are in designated containers and were purchased from participating businesses.
Current participating businesses include AmVets 905, Cantina Taco Loco, Carolina Tap House, Four Saints Brewing Company, The Flying Pig Food and Spirits, Leo’s Whiskey Bar, Lumina Wine & Beer, and Positano.
On February 1st, 2023, the Zoo City Social District map was changed to allow more business participation.
As a reminder, the city says visitors with open containers of alcoholic beverages within the district are subject to the following rules and regulations:
- Any person who violates the Social District ordinance, and any person who aids, abets, encourages, assists in, or contributes to a violation of the Social District ordinance shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable as provided in G.S. 14-4, with a maximum fine of no more than $500.00
- Only alcoholic beverages in containers described above purchased from a permittee located in or contiguous to the Social District may be possessed within the Social District for consumption off of the permittee’s licensed premises
- Any alcoholic beverage purchased for consumption in the Social District shall only be consumed in the Social District, and, unless the person is reentering the licensed premises where the alcoholic beverage was purchased, the beverage shall be disposed of before the person in possession of the alcoholic beverage exits the Social District
- No person shall enter a licensed premises with an alcoholic beverage not purchased from the permittee operating the licensed premises
- Consumers with an alcoholic beverage shall only enter participating businesses within the Social District, as signified by having uniform signage of the Social District logo prominently placed on the entrance(s).
Alcoholic beverages may be consumed within the Social District only on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
