Snow Forecast For Friday – Winter Storm Warning Issued [UPDATED]

ASHEBORO NC [ARCHIVED] – All week meteorologists across the triad have been closely following the forecast models trying to figure out what’s going to happen on Friday. Now the National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Randolph County starting at 1 AM Friday night through 1 AM Saturday morning. 

According to the National Weather Service office in Raleigh, Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches with isolated areas to 3 inches are possible beginning Thursday night through Friday night. 

In a briefing posted online the National Weather Service says where the snow does accumulate snapped trees and subsequent power outages are possible. Black ice is expected Saturday morning, mainly where slushy accumulations have occurred.

Tonight

Rain likely between 1 am and 3 am, then rain and snow. Low around 33. Light east wind becoming northeast 5 to 9 mph in the evening. The chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Friday

Snow before 9 am, then rain between 9 am and noon, then snow afternoon. High near 35. North wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Friday Night

Rain and snow before 3 am, then a slight chance of snow between 3 am and 4 am. Low around 29. North wind 6 to 9 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

UPDATE – 01/08/21 11 AM: While we didn’t wake up to snow on the ground, the National Weather Service is saying there is still a strong possibility of snow today.

In a weather briefing posted just before 7 AM Friday morning National Weather Service meteorologists are saying that they had to adjust the timing of the majority of the snow accumulation to later this afternoon and tonight as well as total snow accumulations downward slightly.

The morning weather briefing says total snow accumulations of 2 to possibly 3 inches are still possible in the warning area and 1 to possibly 2 inches for the advisory area. Data on the NWS site indicates the following probability of snow fall amounts in Asheboro: 

  • 71% chance of acclimation between 0.1 and 1.0 inches 
  • 22% chance of acclimation greater than 1.0 in. 

The Winter Storm warning remains in place until 1 AM on January 9th.
