ASHEBORO N.C. – Tonight, the Asheboro Police Department has confirmed an officer was involved in a vehicular crash involving a juvenile earlier this weekend.
The crash is being investigated by the NCSHP and no further details are available currently.
We are still reaching out to officials for more information and will update this article as more information is made available.
UPDATE (5/8/23 1:45 PM) – Today we are learning about a vehicle accident involving a child and an APD officer that occurred over the weekend. According to information obtained by Randolph News Now on the evening of May 6th an Asheboro Police Officer struck a child crossing the road near the intersection of E Salisbury St and N Elm St. Early reports indicate that the child was crossing the street when she was struck.
Randolph County EMS has confirmed that transported one individual from the scene with non-life threating injures.
The Asheboro Police Department has not commented further on the incident, indicating that the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. We have requested more information from the Highway Patrol but are still awaiting a response to those requests.

UPDATE (5/8/23 3:00PM) – Information received from the North Carolina Highway Patrol this afternoon confirms early reports that an APD officer struck a child in a vehicle accident on Saturday evening.
According to a press release from the Highway Patrol, on Saturday, May 6th, 2023, at around 7pm, an eleven-year-old juvenile was struck by an Asheboro Police Department patrol vehicle while attempting to cross East Salisbury Street between the C-Store and Kylecos’ convince stores.
Information released by the Highway Patrol’s Public Information Officer indicates that Officer Johnson, who was driving the vehicle, was “unable to avoid the juvenile, striking her in the roadway” and says “speed is not believed to be a contributing factor in the investigation.”
The juvenile suffered minor injuries and was transported to Randolph Health in Asheboro. Johnson was uninjured in the crash.
East Salisbury Street near Elm Street was closed for approximately one hour during the investigation, with Troopers clearing the scene at 8:04 p.m.
The Asheboro Police Department has said they are unable to release any further information at this time.
