Authorities Searching for Hit and Run Suspect in Deadly Collision (Updated)

LIBERTY N.C. – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is asking for help searching for a suspect vehicle that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run earlier today.

At 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, Troopers with the State Highway Patrol responded to the report of a crash that occurred on County Line Road near Oak Tree Lane north-east of the town of Liberty in Alamance County.

According to a press release, Darrin Alston Swann, 19, of Liberty, N.C. was traveling south on County Line Road when a vehicle traveling north sideswiped his vehicle. Swann traveled off the roadway to the left and struck a ditch.

Swann was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are searching for a yellow in color, newer model, 26 foot long, Penske box truck that is believed to be involved in the crash.

The suspect vehicle will have visible damage to the driver’s side mirror. The operator of the suspect vehicle has been described by witnesses as a tall, thin black male possibly in his twenties and weighing approximately 160-180 lbs.

The truck was last seen traveling north on County Line Road from Oak Tree Lane near the time of the crash.

UPDATE 1/25/24 5PM – Authorities have apprehended the suspect they believed to have been involved in the deadly hit and run collision yesterday, according to a press release from the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Investigators received information early Thursday morning that the suspect vehicle was traveling northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike near Robbinsville Township in Mercer County, New Jersey. New Jersey State Police were notified and were able to intercept the Penske box-truck near mile marker 63.

Desmone Kashawn Reeder, 45, of Greenville, SC, was taken into custody and is awaiting extradition.

Charges are pending against Reeder. Investigators are set to meet with the Alamance County District Attorney’s Office later today.
