LIBERTY N.C. -  Several law enforcement agencies as part of the Invictus Project Task Force arrested a Greensboro man who allegedly traveled to Liberty to meet a child. On January 12th, 2024, the Liberty Police Department along with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office SERT and investigations units, members of The Invictus Project Task Force, NC SBI, Davie County Sheriff's Office, Roxboro Police Department, and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations, assisted Gaston County Police Department in the conclusion of a multi-agency investigation by arresting an individual by the name of William Russell Gaffney, 62 years old, of Greensboro, NC, according to a press release. Fire at the Worthville Mill in Randleman. (PJ Ward-Brown / North State Journal) RANDLEMAN N.C. - Fire crews from across Randolph County are working to control a fire at the old Worthville Mill on Russell Walker Ave in Randleman as well as a woods fire near Worthville Beach. At 3:57 p.m. fire crews from several departments were dispatched to the Worthville Mill, located at 216 Russell Walker Ave in Randleman for a commercial structure fire. The three-story mill, which has been abandoned for several years, was fully involved. Randolph County Emergency Services reports that around twelve departments are on scene currently. LIBERTY N.C. - The Town of Liberty has announced they will be conducting sewer smoke testing this Thursday (Jan 4th, 2024). The town announced the testing on Facebook. According to post, "smoke testing consists of injecting a harmless, non-toxic fog into a manhole, which will then spread throughout the path of the piping and will take place in the south and east portions of the town. Map - OpenStreetMap® The testing is taking place to detect potential issues and defects throughout the sewer collection system resulting from inflow and infiltration (l & l) from rain water and other liquids that may enter the sewer collection system and have to be treated at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)." On January 1st, 2024, Randolph County 911 received a 911-hangup call with screaming in the background. After not being able to get an answer on return calls deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area. According to a report from the department on the afternoon of December 24th, 2023, an officer was called to the Asheboro Wal-Mart. A loss prevention officer told the officers that the day prior two unidentified black males had come into the store and taken two televisions without paying. In photos released on Facebook one of the suspects can be seen in a traffic vest pushing TVs in a car through the store. ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man was arrested earlier this week after the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office says he attempted to use flashing red and blue lights to pull over a vehicle in Asheboro. On December 20th, 2023, deputies responded to Meadowbrook Rd. in Asheboro. A caller reported that they had been followed by a vehicle flashing blue and red lights that they did not believe was a law enforcement vehicle.  According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, deputies located the vehicle and identified the driver as Dennis Charles Richardson. Department of Transportation will suspend most construction activity on major highways to make travel easier during the upcoming holiday season. Most work along interstates, U.S. and key state routes will be suspended starting Friday morning and will resume Jan. 2, 2024. Exceptions include bridges being replaced, long term lane construction that cannot be temporarily removed and highway work that does not impact travel.  One such spot is Interstate 40 in Haywood County, where lane closures will stay in place for safety reasons.
