Police investigate a shooting late during the night on Monday Aug 1st 2022 [Scott Pelkey | Acme News] ASHEBORO N.C. - Investigators with the Asheboro Police Department spent the night piecing together what led to shots being fired at Frazier Park last night. On August 1st, 2022, just after 10pm, patrol officers with the Asheboro Police Department were dispatched to Frazier Park, located at 517 West Wainman Avenue, after receiving a call about shots fired in the area. When officers arrived, they located a juvenile and a male identified as Heleodoro Juarez-Garcia in the park. Mr. Garcia reported he was driving his Ford Pickup west on Wainman Avenue when the truck was struck by a bullet. SBI Investigates Inmate Death at Randolph County Jail

ASHEBORO N.C. - The Randolph County Sheriff's Office along with the SBI is investigating the death of an inmate earlier this month at the Randolph County Jail. On July 18th, 2022, shortly before 9:00 am, an inmate at the Randolph County Jail was found unresponsive by detention center staff conducting medical rounds. According to a press release, medical staff and officers performed CPR until EMS arrived. The inmate was transported to Randolph Health where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The SBI has been notified of the incident and is investigating the death along with the Sheriff's Office’s Criminal Investigations Division. If you counted each visitor that came to the NC Zoo last year, out loud, one visitor per second, with no breaks, it would take you 23 days to count all of the the 1 Million visitors who came to the NC Zoo last fiscal year. That breaks the previous record highest fiscal year attendance of 879,990 set in 2018-2019. LIBERTY N.C. - The North Carolina Department of Transportation says a portion of NC Hwy 49 in Liberty will be closed for several days as crews work to replace a crossline. According to a Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) Alert sent out this morning Hwy 49 in Liberty will be closed between mile markers 36.4 to 37.3 (between S Valley St and Highfill St). Work is expected to start on Monday July 25th and end on Friday July 29th 2022. Court Orders Asheboro Drug Co To Pay $300,000 In Fines & Stop Dispensing Controlled Substances

ASHEBORO N.C. - The U.S. Department of Justice announced that a federal court entered a consent decree with Asheboro Drug preventing the pharmacy from dispensing controlled substances and ordering the business to pay $300,000 in fines. The consent decree, a type of agreement and court order, comes after an investigation found that pharmacists filled prescriptions in violation of the Controlled Substances Act. According to a press release by the DOJ, Asheboro Drug and its pharmacists cooperated with the government’s investigation and agreed to pay the $300,000 civil monetary penalty and be bound by the consent decree of injunction. ASHEBORO N.C. - A driver is facing a laundry list of charges after police say they found her barely breathing behind the wheel of an SUV last week, after she struck 2 street signs and part of a convenience store on Sunset Ave. According to police reports from the Asheboro Police Department on Wednesday July 13th just before 3:30am, officers responded to 509 Sunset Ave in Asheboro for a report of a suspicious vehicle. When officers arrived they say they located a gray SUV running, with its lights next to a dumpster in a grassy area next the the Quik Chek. ASHEBORO N.C. - On July 6th a marked patrol vehicle from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and a City of Asheboro utility vehicle were involved in a crash in Asheboro. On July 6th 2022, just before 11:30am, Asheboro Police and Fire Departments were called to the scene of a vehicle accident on N Fayetteville St near the Big Dipper restaurant. In that accident a marked patrol car from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and a pickup truck belonging to the City of Asheboro had collided as the patrol car was making a left hand turn across traffic. According to Samantha East, Public Information Officer with the Asheboro Fire Department at 10:42 pm, crews with the Asheboro Fire Department, along with Randolph County EMS were paged out to a structure fire at 1303 Uwharrie St. Officers with the Asheboro Police Department in the area reported heavy smoke billowing from windows of the home when they arrived. ASHEBORO N.C. - Those who made the trip down to Myrtle Beach for the holiday weekend are dealing with bands of rain and strong wind gusts after Tropical Storm Colin formed over South Carolina early this morning. At 11am the National Hurricane Center in Florida issued a Tropical Storm Warning for portions of the NC and SC coast. ( A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.)
