Credit PJ Ward-Brown / North State Journal ASHEBORO N.C. - A traffic back-up up on I-73 NB near the Spero Rd exit north of Asheboro is the result of Troopers with the Highway Patrol's Collision Reconstruction Unit who are on-scene investigating the fatal accident that killed 2 children earlier this week. According to Master Trooper Brian Martin, Troop D Public Information Officer with the Highway Patrol, the Collision Reconstruction Unit is on-scene investigating a previous fatal collision and requested assistance from the fire department to shut down the exit ramp (not the interstate) so that they could map the scene with a drone. ASHEBORO N.C. - Two children died, and a their mother was seriously injured overnight in a vehicle crash on I-73, north of Asheboro. Just before 1 a.m, on Monday May 30th 2022, first responders with Westside Fire Department and Randolph County EMS were dispatched to an unknown vehicle accident on I-73/74 northbound, at the Spero Rd exit. As dispatchers gathered more information they learned it was a single vehicle accident with two children severely injured. Dispatchers added an additional 2 ambulances as well as Ash-Rand Rescue, and notified Baptist Air Care. On May 5th 2022, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro after an unknown suspect threw soap into the fountain causing it to overflow with bubbles. The fountain at Bicentennial Park is not the only fountain that’s been vandalized this year. ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man is in jail under a one million dollar bond after police say he stabbed a victim multiple times on Sunday. Officers with Asheboro Police Department responded to Pelican Snowballs on Sunday May 8th 2022, after a child ran into the business reporting their mother had been stabbed. Officers responded to the business as well as a residence on Washington Ave. There they located they victim, identified as Renalta Smith, who had been stabbed multiple times. Smith was transported by EMS to a local medical facility. Police say after receiving a tip they were able to located the suspect identified as Kelly Lashaun Wiley, at the Dollar General on Zoo Parkway. ASHEBORO N.C. (NC SHP) – Two cars stopped after a minor crash on I-73/74 this morning were struck by a third vehicle bringing the early morning commute on the interstate to a crawl. According to a press release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NC SHP), at 7:26 am on Friday, May 6th 2022, troopers responded to the report of a crash that occurred on I-73 (southbound) near Presnell Street in Randolph County. The NC SHP was already sending Troopers to another accident in the southbound lanes of I-73, inside Asheboro City limits. That first accident had started to backup traffic on the interstate. ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man is facing eight felony animal cruelty charges after Animal Control referred a case to the Sheriff’s Office about the condition of poodles picked up by Happy Hills Animal Foundation.  What led to today's charges started on March 21st 2022, when Animal Control was called out for several dogs running loose around a neighborhood in the Sophia area. Animal control officers were able to get the dogs back into a fenced area, noting that they were severely matted. Drone photo of firefighters on scene at Asheboro Recycling Center (Scott P / Acme News) ASHEBORO N.C. - No injuries were reported after a cargo container at Asheboro Recycling caught fire last Friday. On April 22nd 2022, just after before 4 pm, fire crews from Asheboro, Ulah, and Eastside Fire Department's were dispatched to the Asheboro Recycling Center on Southmont Dr, in Asheboro for a report of a fire. When firefighters arrived they found a cargo container at the corner of the property ablaze. Smoke from the fire could be seen east of Asheboro. According to Samantha East, Public Information Officer with the Asheboro Fire Department crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of fire is undetermined.

According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office on April 13th and 14th, 2022, the agencies Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Team conducted Operation "I See You", focusing on child pornography cybertips, to determine the validity of just over 100 pending tips by conducting interviews, computer examinations, cell phone data extractions, and analyzing evidence. Then you will want to check out the Asheboro Fire Department's upcoming Fire Explorer Program. The program will be from 6-7, starting on Wednesday April 20th, 2022 and meet every other week.
