According to a press release, the scam works like this: The scammer calls a family member using either a blocked caller ID or one that says something official like, “State of North Carolina,” and tells them that their loved one could be released from jail with an electronic ankle monitor (sometimes called electronic house arrest or EHA) for either a flat fee of several hundred dollars and/or a monthly 'monitoring' fee. The Sheriff's Office says they have received multiple reports of someone calling citizens in the county pretending to be a Deputy with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, stating the individual missed a mandated appearance for Jury Duty and need to pay a fine to avoid being arrested. These scammers are using a technique called "spoofing" to make it appear that they are calling from the Sheriff's Office. RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C.  — Randolph County officials are warning the public of a scam involving a letter from the non-existent "Tax Processing Unit of Randolph County".  According to reports concerned citizens have reported receiving a letter in the mail with a bold heading claiming the notice is a “Distraint Warrant.” This letter from the “Tax Processing Unit of Randolph County” attempts to scare residents to respond by stating “levying procedures will begin within 15 days of its receipt.” There is NO such County agency and this is an attempt to scam residents into paying a fake tax debt. We’ve heard there is a phone scam going around again that there is a warrant for a person's arrest in Randolph County and to press 0 for more information.Do not press zero!!! HANG UP!They would just tell you that you owe a certain amount of money immediately or they will come and arrest you. ALSO, Please DO NOT send any form of money to these scammers! And do not volunteer any personal identifying information.For a warrant, the Sheriff’s Office will visit in person.
