ASHEBORO, N.C. (RAMSEUR FD) – The Randolph County Association of Fire Chiefs is kicking off the 2022 Fire Prevention Week by hosting an annual Firefighter Day on October 8th , 2022. The event will be held in the Randolph County Courthouse parking lot at 176 East Salisbury Street in Asheboro from 9am – 4pm. The majority of fire departments that serve Randolph County, along with Ash-Rand Rescue Squad and EMS will be present with informational displays, apparatus and personnel. North Carolina Forest Service, Smokey Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog will also be in attendance. Fire prevention materials and three hundred smoke alarms will be given away to attendees. (Scott P / Acme News) ASHEBORO N.C. - Two people were found dead at an Asheboro home this afternoon after officers responded to a call for a shooting according to Police. On September 26th, 2022, just after 1pm officers from the Asheboro Police Department’s Patrol Division were dispatched to 337 Hamlin Street Asheboro in reference to a shooting. According to a press release from the Police Department, when officers arrived, they located two victims deceased. ASHEBORO N.C. - On October 5th, 2022, Randolph County Government will be sponsoring its 13th annual armed Services Blood Drive to support the military. The blood drive will be held from 11:00 am through 6:00 pm at the National Guard Armory located at 1430 S. Fayetteville Street, Asheboro, NC. Blood donated directly to the Armed Services Blood Program equates to fewer units the military has to purchase from an outside source. Yes, “purchase.” Other sources of blood are sold to agencies that need the supply, including to the military. Donations will support deployed military, Womack Army Medical Center, and other military treatmentfacilities within the Department of Defense. ASHEBORO N.C. - Police arrested a man last night after they we called to a local motel for a stabbing. On September 21st, 2022, just after 7:30 pm, the Asheboro Police Department were called to 827 Albemarle Road in reference to a stabbing.  According to officials with the police department, when officers arrived, they spoke with the victim who reported he had been assaulted. The officer noted wounds to the victim's head however they refused to be transported by EMS. Police say through their investigation officers were able to charge Kenneth Antonio Collins, a 27-year-old male from Aberdeen, with one count of assault inflicting serious bodily injury. Mr. Collins was also served with three separate warrants for failure to appear and is currently confined at the Randolph County Ja...

Photo provided by NC Zoo ASHEBORO, N.C. (NC ZOO) - Olivia, a southern white rhinoceros who has lived at the North Carolina Zoo for more than 30 years, passed away on September 15. Olivia, 54, had lived at the North Carolina Zoo since 1987 and arrived as a breeding pair with male rhino Stan, although no offspring were born. In later years, Olivia and Stan lived together at the Zoo’s spacious rhino annex (off view from the public) in retirement for several years until Stan died in 2019.  Since then, Olivia was reintroduced to the other animals on the Zoo’s 40-acre Watani Grasslands and took on the role of “Great Auntie” to the younger rhinos. Asheboro Fire Department (via Facebook) ASHEBORO N.C. - No one was injured in a late-night fire at the Asheboro Pizza Hut. According to a press release from the Asheboro Fire Department this morning, Fire and Rescue crews from the department's A-shift were dispatched to a commercial fire at the Pizza Hut on E Dixie Dr at around 11:30 pm. "Crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke showing. Crews conducted a search to verify the building was not occupied. Crews were also able to quickly extinguish the fire," said Samantha East, Public Information Officer with the Asheboro Fire Department. ASHEBORO N.C. - A man from Bunnlevel is facing multiple felony charges after being charged with stealing 1,000 gallons of gasoline from a local gas station. On July 9, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Handy Hugo gas station on Hwy 64 East in Asheboro in reference to a possible larceny/theft of fuel in progress. According to a press release, when deputies arrived, they noticed a white Chevrolet truck with a work bed sitting in theparking lot of the gas station over the underground fuel tanks. RALEIGH N.C. (NCDOT)– The N.C. Department of Transportation is reminding people to stay off railroad tracks after multiple incidents involving a train and either a vehicle or pedestrian. Already this year there have been 51 incidents with vehicles and pedestrians on railroad tracks in North Carolina; 10 people have died. “That’s why we’re always reminding people to be very careful around railroad tracks,” said Jason Orthner, director for NCDOT’s Rail Division. “Railroads are only meant for trains. Drivers should obey traffic laws and never stop on the tracks. Also, people should never walk, jog or take pictures on railroad tracks. ASHEBORO N.C. - The North Carolina Zoo has officially began construction on Asia, the NC Zoo's first new continent since North America in 1994 after a ground-breaking event this morning. The private event was attended by staff at the NC Zoo along with city, county, and state officials and elected representatives, members of the media, and companies and organizations involved with everything from local tourism to construction. "Asia has been a long time coming" said Walker Moffit, North Carolina Zoo Council Chairman and Asheboro Mayor Pro Tempore. Construction on the 10 acers set to become the new continent is expected to take around 3 years, with the goal being to open sometime around the summer or fall of 2026.
