SOPHIA N.C. - A 2-year-old was injured Friday evening after getting ahold of a firearm and accidently shooting themself in the leg, says the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. On Friday October 13th, 2023, just after 6 p.m., deputies responded to a home in Sophia for an accidental gunshot wound. The Sheriff's Office says that a 2-year-old child "grabbed their father’s pistol and accidentally pulled the trigger while the whole family was in their vehicle on their farm/land." The condition of the child is unknown at this time other than that they suffered a superficial wound to their leg. The Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident and no further information is available currently.

Just after 8pm, police, firefighters, and paramedics were dispatched to Cross St for a call about a gunshot wound. Within minutes Randolph County 911 received a 2nd call for a gunshot wound on nearby Frank St. Randolph County EMS transported and unknown number of people from the scene. Randolph Hospital's emergency room was temporarily placed on lockdown with Deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office stationed out front and on White Oak st.
