SOPHIA N.C. - Today, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office announced they have filed charges against the father of a two-year-old who suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the leg after getting ahold of a firearm earlier this month. On October 13th 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accidental shooting on Beckerdite Rd. in Sophia. The victim, a two-year-old, had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was being treated by Guil-Rand Fire when the deputies arrived. An investigation into the incident found that four individuals, two adults and two children, had driven a pickup truck out onto a recently purchased property and walked around before returning to the truck. SOPHIA N.C. - A local trucker has been charged by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on NC 87 in Columbus County last week. According to a press release from the NC Highway Patrol, at 2:46 p.m. on Thursday, August 10th, 2023, Troopers responded to a crash on NC 87 near John L Riegel Road in Columbus County. Investigators say that Nicholas Reid Fellers, 28, from Sophia, N.C., was traveling south on NC 87, in a Freightliner box truck when he failed to reduce speed striking the rear of a tractor-trailer that had stopped due to road construction. This morning at around 10 a.m. emergency crews from Guil-Rand and Sophia Fire Departments along with Randolph County EMS responded to I-74 E near Cedar Square Rd for a report of a vehicle off the roadway. ASHEBORO N.C. - A man found unconscious and laying in a driveway is facing charges after police say he drove there in a stolen vehicle. On January 13th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Mill Race Ct., in Sophia, after receiving a call about a possible overdose. The caller reported a male subject was unconscious in the driveway of the residence. When Deputies arrived, they say they located Robert Crumpton, unconscious and lying in the driveway. On September 13, 2022, at approximately 4:21 am, Randolph County 911 operators began receiving calls reporting burglaries of vehicles in the Sophia, Archdale, and Trinity areas. That morning deputies responded to thirty seperate addresses by 9 am and reported fifty vehicles had been entered. On May 21, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Hillsdale Park Drive, in Sophia, after getting a call about a breaking and entering in progress. The caller told 911 a male subject, who arrived on a moped, was inside the garage. When deputies arrived they saw the suspect attempting to start the moped. The Sheriff's Office says when they approached the suspect he refused to obey verbal commands and attempted to drive away on the moped. ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man is facing eight felony animal cruelty charges after Animal Control referred a case to the Sheriff’s Office about the condition of poodles picked up by Happy Hills Animal Foundation.  What led to today's charges started on March 21st 2022, when Animal Control was called out for several dogs running loose around a neighborhood in the Sophia area. Animal control officers were able to get the dogs back into a fenced area, noting that they were severely matted.
