ASHEBORO NC – All the southbound lanes of I-85 were closed for 2 hours Sunday evening after a single vehicle accident killed a local teen and left 3 others with serious injuries..
According to a press release by the NC Highway Patrol, at 6:53 PM on Sunday, September 19th, 2021, troopers responded to the report of a crash that occurred on I-85 near Hopewell Church Road in Randolph County. Troopers say a single vehicle traveled off the roadway to the left, went down into the median and overturned. The vehicle then traveled across all southbound lanes of I-85 and came to rest on the southbound shoulder of the interstate.
The driver was identified as 19 year old Nickolas Smith Coltrane, of Archdale, NC.. Coltrane was pronounced dead on the scene. Three other passengers were transported to High Point Medical Center in High Point with serious injuries.
While the exact cause is still under investigation It’s thought that Coltrane’s vehicle may have lost a wheel which led to the accident.
