[CAPTURED] Prisoner Escapes Work Detail – Last Seen In Asheboro

Mundy was captured by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office on October 23, 2021, just after 5:30 PM after he was spotted walking on Randleman Rd. near Hockett Dairy Rd.

ASHEBORO NC – Police are on the lookout for a man who escaped from a prison work detail, stole a dump truck and was last seen in Asheboro.

On October 21, 2021, the NC Department of Corrections put out an alert for for an escapee, Richard Alexander Mundy, left a work detail in Laurinburg, NC. Police say he stole a tan and grey 1994 Chevrolet 3500 dump truck. That vehicle has not been recovered yet.

Mundy is approximately 5’10” tall with brown hair and hazel eyes. At the time of escape, he was wearing a gray t-shirt and green pants; however, Mundy was last seen possibly wearing a white t-shirt and ball cap. Mundy is serving a 28-year+ prison sentence for Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and he should be considered dangerous. If spotted, citizens are encouraged to call 911 but are warned not to approach him.

Mundy was seen on White Oak Street in Asheboro at around 3:30 PM on the 21st and later on Buffalo Ford Road in Asheboro, driving a white, single cab Chevrolet truck, possibly 1999-2003 model with a black flat bed and side racks. This vehicle is also believed to be stolen.

UPDATE – 10/22/21 10 AM – This morning, at approximately 8:30 am, a Randleman Police Department Officer located the unattended stolen (1994 Chevrolet 3500 dump truck) – Scotland County vehicle in the area of N. Main St., near New Salem Rd., in Randleman. The NC Department of Corrections is on scene and in the area conducting an investigation.

UPDATE 10/23/21 6:$) PM – On October 23, 2021, just after 5:30 PM, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received two calls about a suspicious person walking on Randleman Rd. near Hockett Dairy Rd. Police said both callers said it was possibly Mundy. When deputies arrived the confirmed it was Mundy and he was taken into custody and is being transferred to the custody of the NC Department of Corrections.
