SHP Urges Travelers To Use Caution And Drive Sober While Traveling This Christmas

GREENSBORO N.C, (NCSHP) – The State Highway Patrol is preparing for increased traffic across our State during the Christmas Holiday period.

Accordingly, members of the State Highway Patrol will increase visibility on highly traveled corridors to promote safe driving habits and assist stranded motorists. The Patrol will proactively target dangerous driving behaviors to include speeding, aggressive driving and impaired driving. Additionally, members will increase patrols in and around our rest areas.

The Highway Patrol is also once again partnering with the North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program for the 2021 Christmas and New Year’s “Booze It & Lose It” campaign. Recognized as one of the nation’s most effective anti-drunk-driving campaigns, “Booze It & Lose It” has created increased awareness of the dangers and the consequences of drinking and driving through innovative education campaigns and extensive enforcement of impaired-driving laws.

It’s critical that drivers understand the significance of sober driving, and the tragic consequences of driving drunk. With more drivers on the roads during this busy time of year, it’s more important than ever for us to stress the importance of safe driving habits. We know everyone is rushing around, finishing those last-minute errands and attending holiday gatherings. Before you ever head out to the festivities, make sure you plan a sober ride home, because drunk driving should never be an option.

If you’re the designated driver, make sure you keep that promise of safety to yourself and your passengers. Stay hydrated with water and other non-alcoholic beverages. Take the role of designated driver seriously – people are relying on you.
