Department of Transportation will suspend most construction activity on major highways to make travel easier during the upcoming holiday season. Most work along interstates, U.S. and key state routes will be suspended starting Friday morning and will resume Jan. 2, 2024. Exceptions include bridges being replaced, long term lane construction that cannot be temporarily removed and highway work that does not impact travel.  One such spot is Interstate 40 in Haywood County, where lane closures will stay in place for safety reasons. ASHEBORO N.C. – The city of Asheboro has announced its third Annual Gifting Tree Project, and registration is underway for a limited number of trees. Organized by the City of Asheboro's Cultural & Recreation Services, the Gifting Tree Project transforms Bicentennial Park into a dazzling Christmas tree display. Local families, schools, and organizations decorate their trees in a competition to win a donation (provided by Modern Toyota) to the nonprofit of their choice. Want to participate? Accordingly, members of the State Highway Patrol will increase visibility on highly traveled corridors to promote safe driving habits and assist stranded motorists. Local law enforcement, including NC Highway Patrol, started the organization to assist families in Randolph County who were in need. "Our organization is given names of children in need by both school systems’ counselors/social workers. We then help Santa shop for those children in Randolph County who will not have a Christmas. We raise money throughout the year and normally provide a hot meal for the children and their family on the day the presents are distributed.
