ASHEBORO N.C. – A crazy moment for witnesses on Monday afternoon in Asheboro after a knife wielding man on Sunset Ave had to be subdued with a taser.

According to Robbie Brown, Assistant Chief of Police with the Asheboro Police Department, on May 23rd, 2022 just before 4pm, officers with the department’s Patrol Division responded to 615 Sunset Avenue in reference to a welfare check on a shirtless male who was yelling.

Prior to officers arriving on-scene 911 callers had reported that the man was armed with a knife in the parking lot of the old Courier-Tribune building and was attempting to jump in front of vehicles.

When officers arrived they located the male who continually refused to drop his knife and was repeatedly yelling at the officers. According to witnesses in the area, officers had guns drawn pointing at the male.

According to police after multiple attempts to speak with the male and get him to drop the knife an officer deployed his Taser.  The individual was subdued and taken into custody, he was ultimately transported by EMS to a local medical facility for a mental evaluation.

No charges have been filed and the mans name is not being released due to medical privacy policies.
