Pedestrian in Critical Condition after being Struck by Vehicle on US-64 [UPDATED]

ASHEBORO, N.C.– A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on US-64 at Mack Road tonight.

Just before 6 p.m., Randolph County 911 dispatched Westside and Asheboro Fire Departments along with Randolph County EMS to US Hwy 64 W at Mack Rd, for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in front of the Citgo.

According to officials with Randolph County EMS, one patient was reported to have sustained critical injuries and was being temporarily transported to Randolph Hospital as emergency crews awaited a helicopter.

At around 6:30 p.m., UNC AirCare landed at Randolph Hospital to pick up the patient.

The identity of the pedestrian has not been released and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

According to a crash report released today by the Asheboro Police Department, a driver in a 2006 Nissan had entered the turning lane on U.S. Hwy 64 W for Mack Rd going under the speed limit. The driver told police they did not see the pedestrian standing in the roadway who they described as wearing dark colored clothing. The investigation by police that night found tire impressions sixty-two feet prior to impact.

Police say that the pedestrian failed to yield the right of way to the vehicle. No charges have been filed against the driver.

There have been no updates regarding the condition of the pedestrian whose name is being withheld currently.
