ASHEBORO N.C. – The community is coming together to support a local family after their 10-year-old son was seriously injured in a house fire that destroyed the family home.
On December 8th, 2023, at 2:50 a.m. the Burroughs’ family home on Mountain Creek Rd. caught fire. At the time, Kevin and Shauna Burroughs were home asleep with their two children, 15-year-old daughter, Kamdyn and 10-year-old son, Chevy.
According to stories shared by family and friends with local media outlets, Shauna was able to pull Kamdyn out through a window. Kevin, the father, was pushed back by heavy smoke and fire trying to reach Chevy and ended up breaking through a wall to reach his son.
Chevy suffered second and third-degree burns and was flown to Brenner Children’s Hospital where he was placed on a ventilator. On Tuesday December 12th, Kevin Burroughs reported that Chevy had made it out of his first surgery on Facebook. A second surgery is scheduled for this Thursday.
The Randolph County Fire Marshal’s Office says they are still investigating the cause of the fire. The family, left without a home, is currently staying at the hospital with Chevy.
After the tragic story was shared on social media and with local media outlets the community rallied to support the family. A Facebook page titled CHEVY Strong was started to share updates with the community. GoFundMe fundraisers have raised nearly $25,000 for the family and several local businesses have also been coordinating donation drop offs for the family.
“We are truly humbled at the love and compassion that we are receiving for our family and friends and complete stranger(s)” said Kevin Burroughs on Facebook.
“The community has been so supportive it is so humbling “said Bambi Church, one of the organizers of the GoFundMe page, who says the best way to help now is through donating money, gift cards, and clothes.
The family asks the community to keep the prayers coming in for Chevy.
UPDATE 12/18/23 – On December 15th, the Burroughs family reported on Facebook that Chevy made it through a second surgery lasting over 4 hours and is in stable condition. Additional surgeries are expected to be required in the future.
Helping Out
The Black Powder Smokehouse will be holding a charity event starting December 19th running through the 23rd where they will be donating a portion of all proceeds from their Asheboro and Jamestown locations to the Burroughs family. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is located at 516 S. Fayetteville Street in Asheboro.
On Wednesday December 20th, there will be a trailer parked in the Southmont parking lot at 2497 Southmont School Rd, in Asheboro accepting donations for the Burroughs family. Donations will be accepted anytime that day and taken to a storage unit for the family. Monetary gifts will be accepted inside the office.
Needed clothing includes:
- Teenage girl size 8 shoes and small leggings.
- Boy size 10 slim pants size 10 shirt, and size 3 youth in shoes.
- Women size 8 in pants, medium to large in tops, and size 8 shoes.
- Men XL shirts 34/34 pants and 10 1/2 size shoes.
