ASHEBORO N.C. - A suspect in a stolen vehicle who led police on a brief chase last weekend found out making it to the front porch is not home base and was arrested. On June 18th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to High Pine Church Rd, in Asheboro, for a report of a stolen vehicle. A 911 caller was the victim and was following the stolen vehicle, providing police with a direction of travel. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, a deputy was able to intercept the vehicle as it ran a stop sign on High Pine Church Rd and continued onto Hopewell Friends Rd at a high rate of speed. With more than 100,00 total votes the Zoo announced that out of the six choices, the winning name is “Fenn.”  The other names offered were, “Nelson,” after Nelson Mandela, “Mosi”, African name used for firstborn son, “Tamu” Swahili for sweet, “Jackson” The calf's dad is named Jack, Son of Jack, and “Bongani” This Zulu name means grateful, thankful. Fenn was chosen after the founders of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, Julian, and Stephanie Fennessy. World Giraffe Day is celebrated every year on June 21. ASHEBORO N.C. - A man who had the police called on him for banging on the doors of a closed business asked police for a ride and was arrested when police say they located drugs on him. On June 18th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Spanish Ln., in Asheboro, after a caller reported a male was banging on the doors of the business even though it was after hours, and they were closed. Deputies didn’t locate the male on the property but canvassed the area for the suspect, locating him on US Hwy 220 S. sitting on the ground. ASHEBORO N.C. - Police are investigating a stabbing that took place earlier this afternoon at Bicentennial Park in Asheboro. Just after 3pm on June 15th, 2023, police, fire, and EMS were dispatched to Bicentennial Park in downtown Asheboro for a report of a stabbing. One victim was located near the fountain, bleeding, and was treated and then transported from the scene by EMS. Their condition is not known currently. APD deployed a K9 to attempt to locate a suspect who fled the scene. Detectives and Investigators are currently on scene collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses. RANDLEMAN N.C. - A driver who crashed head on into another vehicle while going the wrong way on I-73/74 near Randleman last weekend is facing several charges including DUI and child abuse. Shortly before midnight, Randolph County 911 had received a call from a driver who was taking the Randleman exit off I-73/74 onto West Academy St and reported they were nearly hit by a car that had entered the exit ramp going the wrong direction. Randolph County 911 notified both local police and deputies in the area as well as the highway patrol. Within only a few minuites, at 11:57 p.m. Randolph County 911 received its first call reporting a wrong way driver had crashed head on into another vehicle in the southbound lanes of I-73/74 between the Randleman exit and the Randleman Lake Bridge. ...

In the early morning hours of June 10th, 2023, Asheboro Police, along with Archdale PD, Liberty PD, NC State Highway Patrol, and the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, conducted a DUI checkpoint on W Dixie Dr. According to Robbie Brown, Assistant Chief of Police with the Asheboro Police Department, the checkpoint led to a total of thirty-three citations being issued. According to a press release, on June 3rd, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a small black SUV traveling east bound on US Hwy 64 E. at a high rate of speed, on the wrong side of the road. A deputy near Crestwick Rd. and US Highway 64 E. witnessed a black SUV in the center-turning lane, passing vehicles in a no passing zone at a high rate of speed. On June 10th, 2023, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputies returning from a call were traveling westbound on US Hwy 64 E when near Substation Rd (near the 64-bypass split) they observed a vehicle that had crashed into a street sign in the median. ASHEBORO N.C. - The Randolph County Sheriff's Office has charged a local man with sex crimes involving a minor. On May 31, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office says they received a report of sexual acts upon minors. According to a press release, "following an investigation of the allegations, Criminal Investigation Detectives sought charges against Aaron Thomas Garner for three counts of felony first degree statutory sex offense with a child under 13 years of age." On June 6, 2023, Garner was located, arrested, and transported to the Randolph County Jail, where he was served the warrants. At around 2pm on Saturday June 10th, 2023, emergency crews responded to a report of a 2-vehicle crash in front of the McDonalds at 1436 N Fayetteville St, in Asheboro, N.C. According to an accident report by the Asheboro Police Department, Ashley Renee Phillips was attempting to make a left hand turn out of the parking lot of McDonalds onto N Fayetteville St (US 220 Bus) but failed to yield for an oncoming motorcycle.
