ASHEBORO N.C. - In its April session, the Randolph County Grand Jury returned indictments against people. Jonathan Cass Carter A True Bill of Indictment was issued on Jonathan Cass Carter for felony habitual breaking/entering. The indictment was issued as a result of an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division. Carter was arrested on April 10th, 2023, and taken to the Randolph County Jail where he was served the order for arrest and issued a $25,000 secured bond and set the next court date for April 17, 2023, in Randolph County Superior Court. ASHEBORO N.C. - A local woman has been charged with arson after a house fire near Asheboro this week. On April 11th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Waynick Meadow Rd., Asheboro, in reference to a residential fire. When deputies arrived fire crews on scene had already contained the fire. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, deputies had responded to two earlier calls at the same residence for arguments between persons living at the address. One resident advised that she was inside when she heard someone beating on the outside of the residence and shouting that it was on fire. ASHEBORO N.C. - The City of Asheboro has announced they will be hosting Asheboro’s first Mariachi Festival on the first weekend in May. The festival is split across two days, with a paid concert featuring Latin GRAMMY-Winning female group Flor de Toloache on Friday May 5th at the Sunset Theater, followed by a free event Saturday May 6th at Bicentennial Park featuring local Mariachi bands from the Triad and Asheboro's own Ballet Folkloric Guadalupano. Photo: Randolph County Sheriff's Office ASHEBORO N.C. - The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and Safe Kids Randolph County are hosting a Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 19, 2023, to allow individuals to just drive through and dispose of prescription drugs that could be diverted or misused. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the misuse of opioid medications an epidemic. Proper disposal of expired, unused, and unneeded medications from the home is a crucial element of a strategy for promoting public health and safety. Each day, approximately 2,500 teenagers use prescription drugs to get high for the first time. ASHEBORO N.C. - The Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) office located inside the Randolph County Public Health main building on South Fayetteville Street is moving to a new location. In a press release, Randolph County Public Health announced that as of Wednesday, April 19th, 2023, the WIC office will be relocating to Northgate Shopping Center at 1461 North Fayetteville Street, in Asheboro. The Northgate Shopping Center is also home to the County Board of Elections, Asheboro Police Department Substation, and the Adult Day Reporting Center. ASHEBORO N.C. - On person has been transported to the hospital in serious condition after being shot earlier this afternoon in a neighborhood near Sunset Ave in Asheboro. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department, on April 11th, 2023, at 12:58 PM, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to the Quick Check at 509 Sunset Avenue in reference to a victim on the sidewalk of the store suffering from a small caliber gunshot wound to the lower torso. Randolph County EMS and Asheboro Fire/Rescue Department responded to the scene and the victim was transported to an out of county medical facility by Randolph County EMS for further medical treatment. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a single-engine Vans RV-12 aircraft crashed south of Greensboro Executive Airport in Guilford County around 11 a.m. local time Tuesday, April 11th, 2023. The aircraft crashed into a hill on the side of US Hwy 421, near the Monnett Road bridge, just south of the airport, closing the bridge as well as one lane of US Hwy 421 SB. ASHEBORO N.C. - The driver of a motorcycle who tried to flee from police Sunday was arrested after crashing his motorcycle. On April 9th, 2023, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to pull over a motorcycle near US Hwy 220 S. According to a press release, the driver fled onto Old State Highway starting a vehicle pursuit and onto US HWY 220 S. from Virgil Hill Road where he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. Police say the driver, who was identified as Richard Anthony Vestal, Jr fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. Randolph County EMS responded to evaluate Vestal and he was transported to Randolph Health for evaluation. At the hospital, a search found suspected illicit drugs. Just before 7pm on April 10th, 2023, Randolph County 911 dispatched emergency crews to 1304 E Dixie Dr, in Asheboro, for a report of a vehicle crash. Callers reported a vehicle had gone down an embankment and crashed into the side of the Verizon store on E Dixie Dr. Asheboro Fire and Police, Westside Fire, Eastside Fire, Franklinville Fire, Ash-Rand Rescue, and Randolph County EMS all responded to the scene.
