Man Indicted In Connection With 2020 Standoff with Police

ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man who shot at officers during a standoff in Liberty back in 2020 has been indicted by a Grand Jury and is facing multiple charges including Felony Attempted Murder. On September 13, 2020, deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office along with officers from the Liberty Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Hwy 49 N, just outside the Liberty city limits, regarding a domestic call and shots were fired inside the residence. The suspect, Robert Dwight Bender, had retreated into a structure behind the residence and the caller was safely removed from the house. In Jail For Murder Man Indicted By Grand Jury In Dismissed Child Abuse Case

ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man who is currently in jail charged with first degree murder related to child abuse was recently indicted by the Grand Jury in connection with a 2011 child abuse case. According to a press release from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, during the June session of Grand Jury, a true bill of indictment was issued for the arrest of Billy Ray Newsome, III, for felony child abuse-inflicting serious bodily injury. The Sheriff's office says the indictment stems from a 2011 child abuse case investigated by the Sheriff’s Office's Criminal Investigations Division where Newsome was charged in 2012 for assaulting a seven-month-old child; but, the case was dismissed in 2013 for lack of evidence. UPDATED | Asheboro Fire Responds To Commercial Fire on Albemarle Rd

ASHEBORO N.C. - Just after 5:30pm the Asheboro Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke alarm at 857 Albemarle Rd, a vacant structure between the Quality Inn and Roadway Inn (former Motel 6). When firefighters arrived the reported a commercial structure with smoke showing from the structure. An intal search was conducted the building was reported clear. Within 30-45 mins crews were ventilating the building to remove the smoke. No injuries were reported and the cause is unknown at this time. Overdose Call in Asheboro Leads To Vehicle Chase – Couple Arrested

ASHEBORO N.C. - What started as a call for a possible overdose in Asheboro ended with two people arrested, a gun seized, a stolen car recovered, all after a vehicle chase. On June 30, 2022 at around 6pm emergency crews and police were called to a possible overdose in the parking lot of the Randolph Mall. The 911 caller stated two subjects were slumped over inside a vehicle, which was parked in front of Belks. ASHEBORO N.C. - Three people were recently charged in connection with a violent home invasion and robbery in Randleman that took place earlier this year. According to the the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on February 13th, 2022, they responded to a reported home invasion, robbery and assault on WOW Rd., in Randleman. The victim told police two males entered the home, held her down, and sprayed her with pepper spray. Asheboro Police Officer Resigns After Off-Duty DUI Charge

ASHEBORO N.C. - An Asheboro Police officer has resigned after being charged with driving while impaired while off-duty last month. In the early morning hours of Friday, May 27th 2022, a patrol officer with the Asheboro Police Department conducted a traffic stop for suspicion of DWI on U.S. Highway 64 near Presnell St. The driver in that stop was identified by police as 25-year-old M’Leigha Tashona Brown, an off-duty officer with the Asheboro City Police Department. M’Leigha Tashona Brown Troopers with the NC State Highway Patrol, who were requested by officers on scene arrived at the traffic stop and transported Brown to the Randolph County Jail for a breath test.
