ASHEBORO N.C. (City of Asheboro) - The City of Asheboro, along with the Asheboro Police Department, would like to announce that after nearly 32 years of dedicated service to the City of Asheboro and its citizens, Chief Mark Lineberry plans to retire effective March 1, 2024. Chief Lineberry started his career in law enforcement in May 1992 at the Asheboro Police Department. Lineberry worked as a patrol officer and detective until October 2001 when he was promoted to Sergeant. Lineberry rose through the ranks ultimately being selected as Chief of Police in October 2019. ASHEBORO N.C. - Early voting dates and locations for the 2024 Primary Election in Randolph County have been announced by the Randolph County Board of Elections. Early voting will start on Thursday, February 15th, 2024, and run through Saturday March 2nd, 2024. Weekdays early voting will be from 8 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. with different hours on weekends and not early voting held on Saturday, February 24th, or Sunday, February 25th, 2024. The Primary Election will be on March 5th, 2024 – 6:30 a.m. -7:30 p.m. You must vote at your assigned voting precinct site on Election Day. Several months ago, two Von der Decken's Hornbills arrived at the North Carolina Zoo. Jake, the male, who came from the Los Angeles Zoo, and Zuri, the female, who came from the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in New York. After spending around a month in quarantine, a standard precaution, the pair were introduced to each other and now reside together in the Desert Dome. Von der Decken's Hornbills (Tockus deckeni) are a distinctive species of birds found in the arid regions of East Africa, particularly in Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania. (Stock Photo / Acme News Archive) ASHEBORO N.C. – No one was injured after a reported commercial fire at the Georgia Pacific Plant in Asheboro earlier this week. On January 29th, 2024, at 1:01 p.m. Asheboro Fire and Rescue Department (AFRD) was dispatched to a commercial fire at 200 McDowell Rd. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:04 p.m., reporting nothing showing from the exterior of the building. A representative with the company told fire crews there was a fire in one of the machines at the plant. Firefighters were able to locate and extinguish the fire and the incident was under control at 1:20 p.m. All personnel from the plant had been evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire department, and no injuries were reported. SEAGROVE N.C. - A suspect is being held without bond at the Randolph County Jail facing a felony murder charge, according to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. On January 23, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) responded to Osborn Mill Rd., Seagrove, in reference to a reported trespassing. Upon arrival, a male subject was located with obvious injuries; including gunshot wounds. The responding deputy began CPR and requested Randolph County EMS. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene and RCSO Detectives began a death investigation. The victim was identified as Richard Andrew Green, II. At 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, Troopers with the State Highway Patrol responded to the report of a crash that occurred on County Line Road near Oak Tree Lane north-east of the town of Liberty in Alamance County. According to a press release, Darrin Alston Swann, 19, of Liberty, N.C. was traveling south on County Line Road when a vehicle traveling north sideswiped his vehicle. ASHEBORO N.C. – A landlord is facing a felony charge of cruelty to animals after he shot a dog late last week, according to the Sheriff’s Office. On January 19th, 2024, the deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Whitt Hunt Rd., in Pleasant Garden, for a call about shots being fired. While enroute, Randolph County 9-1-1 advised that the caller reported that a dog had been shot by their landlord John David Whitt, said the Sheriff’s Office in a press release. Upon arrival, the Deputy observed the dog, which was still alive, lying in a driveway. Randolph County Animal Services responded to assist in the investigation. ASHEBORO N.C. - Police are investigating a fire at an Asheboro home that left one person dead. According to the Asheboro Police Department, on January 23rd, 2024, at around 3:30pm, officers were dispatched to 308 South Park Street at the request of the Asheboro Fire Department. When officers arrived, they learned the victim was sitting in a wheelchair on the front porch of a residence when a fire started in, or around, the wheelchair.  The victim was transported to a local medical facility where he died from his injuries.  Officers identified the individual as Roman Aleksander Stobnicki and say detectives from the department’s Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the case to determine the origins of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident...

On January 21st. 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Millers Mill Rd., Trinty, in for a report of trespassing. When deputies arrived, the caller told them that several individuals were living inside the vacant residence without authorization and wished them to be removed.
