ASHEBORO N.C. - The Asheboro Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own today. Chris Hoover was with the department for 24 years rising to the rank of Battalion Chief while also a member of the Tabernacle Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, and Ash-Rand Rescue. Hoover sadly lost his battle with COVID-19 on January 8th 2022. On Sunday firefighters with Asheboro made the trip up to UNC Medical Center to bring back his casket. Overnight heavy rains and high winds downed trees and knocked out power. While the snow continues to fall, rain and high winds are the primary concern today. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for Randolph County until 4 p.m. Monday. (sima / Adobe Stock) ASHEBORO N.C. — After a week and a half of unusually warm temperatures that had many of us were checking our calendar to make sure it said December, temperatures are set to plunge Sunday night with even a possible chance to see some snow Monday morning. According to a forecast from the National Weather Service in Raleigh, Sunday highs are expected to be around 69° F with lows Sunday night plunging down to 32° F. Monday forecasters are calling for a 30% chance of rain and/or snow followed by sunny conditions with a high of 45° F. Randolph News Now was notified just after 5 p.m. in an e-mail from the Randolph County Board of Elections which stated "By order of the North Carolina Supreme Court, filing for all offices for the 2022 primary is suspended. This includes the rescheduled municipal contests, and any separate filing period for those municipal contests in January." ASHEBORO N.C. - A man was shot and his car stolen this morning in Trinity, and now police are asking the public to be on the look out for a suspect vehicle. According to a press release from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office at around 9 a.m. this morning they responded to a call about an assault at the Dollar General on Hwy 62 in Trinity. A 911 caller had reported that the victim had come into the store asking for help stating he had been shot and his car stolen. Randolph County EMS transported the victim to an area hospital. Forest Service is warning of increased fire danger for most North Carolina and asking for public to postpone any outdoor burning, especially across the Mountains, Piedmont and Sandhills. The warning comes as the agency is responding to Surry County as over 250 acres have burned at Pilot Mountain. The Winston Salem Journal is reporting that the fire that started off a popular trail on Saturday afternoon, By Sunday the fire had spread to cover 250 acres.
