ASHEBORO N.C. - Last month the City of Asheboro made changes to the Social District downtown. Here is what you need to know. The Zoo City Social District is a special area in historic downtown Asheboro where visitors carry and consume alcoholic beverages in outdoor public spaces during specified times, so long as the beverages are in designated containers and were purchased from participating businesses. Current participating businesses include AmVets 905, Cantina Taco Loco, Carolina Tap House, Four Saints Brewing Company, The Flying Pig Food and Spirits, Leo’s Whiskey Bar, Lumina Wine & Beer, and Positano. On Wednesday, March 8th at 9:30 AM, the National Weather Service will conduct a statewide tornado drill. Every school, business, and residence are encouraged to participate in this drill by taking a few moments to practice your severe weather safety plan and seek shelter for a few minutes as if a tornado were headed your way.  The test will come in the form of a Required Monthly Test which will be activated by the State Emergency Alert System and be carried by local radio broadcasters. (NC ZOO) - The North Carolina Zoo is excited to officially announce its new male lion, Haji, has arrived.  Haji, three years old and weighing 400 pounds, came from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans as a companion for the Zoo's female lion Mekita, 13. The Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) Lions Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommended the pairing.   Mekita's last mate—23-year-old Reilly—died in August 2022, leaving her as the Zoo's only lion. Reilly lived at the Zoo for 21 years, spending most of his time as Mekita's mate. (NC ZOO) - The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and North Carolina Zoo are pleased to announce that African elephant Artie arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee on Tuesday, January 31. Artie (Aardvark), a 40-year-old African male, was born in the wilds of Zimbabwe and brought to the United States in 1986 with a group of young elephants that were orphaned due to culling carried out by the Zimbabwe government. Artie arrived at North Carolina Zoo at the age of 15 years. The N.C. Zoo Council, a 15-member board appointed by the governor to oversee the operation and development of the Zoo held a planned virtual meeting on February 8th, 2023. In that meeting the group voted to approve an increase in ticket prices as well as other changes. Council members listened to N.C. Keaton’s Place, a recovery recourse center located in Asheboro says they aid in navigating the complex process of locating detoxification and rehabilitation facilities for those who are seeking to change their lives and free themselves from addiction to drugs or alcohol, according to the organization's website. ASHEBORO N.C. - The National Weather Service in Raleigh is warning of the possibility of severe weather today including the threat of an isolated tornado. Forecasters at the NWS are saying to expect rain and wind today with a chance of embedded heavier showers and thunderstorms, a couple of which may become severe, during the afternoon and through the evening. While storms are expected to be isolated, forecasters say those that form will be capable of producing damaging straight line wind gusts. Additionally, southerly winds may gust at times between 30 and 35 mph during the afternoon and evening. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. This week, keepers at the North Carolina Zoo are mourning the loss of Natalie, a female southern white rhinoceros who had been at the NC Zoo since 2007.
