(Stock Photo / Scott Pelkey / Acme News) ASHEBORO N.C. - Last year Randolph County Emergency Services’ 9-1-1 operators answered 128,580 calls. We reviewed records to find out the where and why. Of those thousands of calls, the most recorded call type at 11% (14,089) were 9-1-1 hang-up, misdials, or open lines (aka butt-dials), followed by 11,186 calls (8.7%) which were marked as duplicate calls where several people called in to report the same incident. Theft was responsible for the largest number of 9-1-1 calls reporting crime in 2022 (when larceny and burglaries are combined) with a total of 4,145 or 3.2% of all calls. ASHEBORO N.C. - A wanted man is facing multiple charges after authorities say while attempting to flee from deputies the suspect rammed a patrol car before almost crashing into a home earlier this week. According to a press release, on December 26th, 2022, Deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office were searching the Ramseur/Liberty areas for Jimmy Ray Pearson, who had multiple outstanding warrants. A deputy observed Pearson's vehicle traveling north on Ramseur Julian Rd. Additional deputies responded and a traffic stop was initiated but Pearson refused to stop and continued on Colonial Trading Path. Unattended Camp Fire sparks Woods Fire in Birkhead Mountains Wilderness Area

(Photo by Jared Byrd / Randolph County Emergency Services) ASHEBORO N.C. - Officials are saying an unattended campfire is to blame for starting a woods fire that consumed around 1.5 acres in the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness Area this afternoon. At around 2 pm, firefighters from Ulah Fire Department along with Rangers from the NC Forestry Service were dispatched to the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness Area for a report of a woods fire. According to a post on Facebook by the Ulah Fire Department the fire was located approximately 1.5 miles into the Birkhead Wilderness trails. Personnel had the fire contained within an hour of reaching its point of origin and were able to clear the scene at around 4:30 pm. No injuries were reported.

ASHEBORO N.C. - Asheboro Police Officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit after trying to pull over a suspect they believe was connected to several vehicle break-ins at a local apartment complex last week. According to information from the Asheboro Police Department, officers were notified of several 911 calls reporting at least five vehicles broken into at Summers Run Apartments. Police say they were able to determine the suspect's vehicle. That vehicle, which had been reported stolen out of Greensboro, was spotted and sped away when officers attempted to pull it over on a traffic stop. Duke Energy, in a statement on its outage tracker says that due to extremely cold temperatures driving unusually high energy demand, the power company has deployed temporary power outages across the system. ASHEBORO N.C. - An elderly pedestrian walking along US 220 in Randleman last night when he was fatally struck by a vehicle in an accident. According to a press release from the NC State Highway Patrol, at 10:07 pm on Thursday, December 15th, 2022, troopers responded to the report of a crash that occurred on US 220 Business near New Salem Road in Randolph County. Glenn Chriscoe, 83, of Randleman, NC, was traveling as a pedestrian, north on US 220 Business. A driver was traveling north on US 220 Business in a 2016 Nissan Altima. That driver struck Chriscoe in the roadway. Chriscoe died on-scene, the driver was uninjured during the collision.
