ASHEBORO N.C. - No one was injured in a house fire early this morning off Martin Luther King Jr Dr in Asheboro. At 3:30 am, on May 9th, 2023, officers with the Asheboro Police Department reported a house fire at 625 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Firefighters with the Asheboro Fire/Rescue Department were dispatched and arrived on scene at 03:34 am. Initial reports indicated that there may have been people inside the residence, however a search determined that no one was inside the structure. According to Samantha East, Fire and Life Safety Educator, and Public Information Officer for the Asheboro Fire/Rescue Department 6 units with eighteen personnel from the department were able to extinguish the fire by 03:57 am. ASHEBORO N.C. - This Sunday, May 14th, is Mother's Day and if you are looking to do something special to do with your mother this weekend, how about a trip to the North Carolina Zoo? The North Carolina Zoo will be offering a $2 discount off the price of admission for Moms with a paying guest on Sunday, May 14th, 2023. Moms simply need to mention the “Mother's Day coupon” at the admissions gate to receive the discount. Mother's Day comes just in time to check out the Kaleidoscope Butterfly Garden. Located in Junction Plaza, the exhibit recently opened for the season. Open to guests every day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through September, tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the ticket booth near the Junction Tram Stop.

Contributed Photo ASHEBORO N.C. - An armed individual making threats triggered a police response on E Dorsett Ave in Asheboro ealier this week. On May 1st, 2023, at around 5pm, Randolph County 911 received a call that a female was armed with a handgun and threating to shoot another individual. A total of nine officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to the scene and spoke with the victims who indicated they were walking through the yard of a residence on East Dorsett Avenue when a female from the residence threatened them with a handgun. In March of 2019, the NC Zoo announced they had become a 'Certified Sensory Inclusive venue' by KultureCity, a worldwide, leading non-profit recognized for using their resources to revolutionize and effect change in the community for those with sensory needs. “We are very excited to offer this program to enhance our inclusion efforts for all guests,” said the Zoo’s Guest Service Officer Jamie Merchel in a press release announcing the certification. Wednesday afternoon, May 3rd, 2023, Asheboro City Schools held a ribbon cutting to officially unveil the new and improved home of the Blue Comets to elected officials, school system leadership, and members of the media. Construction of Asheboro High School began in 1949 and opened for students beginning with the 1950-1951 school year. The building has become somewhat of a historical icon in Asheboro. driftwood / Adobe Stock Asheboro Cultural & Recreation Services is proud to announce that we will be offering a Shuffleboard Doubles League for adults ages 50 or better this summer. Not completely sure how to play or keep score – don’t worry. We will go over all the rules and provide all the equipment needed. The local league is available for men and women with the only restriction being that all participants need to be 50 years old or greater. Partners can be comprised of two males, two females or one male and one female. This league will take place on Tuesday mornings during the months of May and June. On April 25th, 2023, at around 6pm, Asheboro Fire/Rescue, Ash-Rand Rescue, and Randolph County EMS were called to ¡UNA MAS! Modern Taqueria-Margaritas at 1337 E Dixie Dr in Asheboro for a report of a vehicle that had crashed into the restaurant. Crews arrived to find a pickup-truck that had crashed into the rear of the building next to the Hwy 42 entrance into the Crossroads Plaza shopping center. [Scott Pelkey | North State Journal] ASHEBORO N.C. - One person was taken to the hospital after a reported stabbing at the Randolph Mall Tuesday evening. On April 25th, 2023, at around 6:15 pm, police were called to the Dunham's Sports store at the Randolph Mall for a report of a stabbing. According to Robbie Brown, Assistant Chief of Police with the Asheboro Police Department, the victim reported he was assaulted by several black males while in the business. The victim was transported to a local medical facility for treatment, no update on their condition is available at this time and no information about the individuals involved can be released due to their age. Brown says the case has been assigned to a detective in Criminal Investigations Division.
