At about 3 p.m. Wednesday, an internet outage began to affect large parts of Randolph County. By 6 p.m., Randolph County Emergency Services had posted to Facebook that it was experiencing a “degradation in the phone and internet services affecting Brightspeed and AT&T customers.” The same outage also affected internet and telephone services at the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, which also notified the public through social media. Asheboro man arrested in connection with fatal hit & run on I-73

ASHEBORO — An Asheboro man has been charged and arrested in connection with a fatal hit and run earlier this month on I-73 near Greensboro. Around 7:30 a.m. on April 17th, 2024, the State Highway Patrol responded to a crash on I-73 south, near West Steeple Chase Road in Guilford County. According to the Highway Patrol, 55-year-old Clyde Strickland, of Raeford, N.C. was walking south on I-73 when he was struck by a vehicle. On Monday, April 22nd, the Highway Patrol was notified by medical staff that Strickland had succumbed to injuries. Following the crash the NC Highway Patrol sent out a press release to local media outlets asking for information to identify the vehicle and/or driver. ASHEBORO — Starlab, a portable planetarium purchased by the State Library in 2018, is making a stop at several Randolph County Libraries this month. StarLab is a portable inflatable planetarium that uses a computer and projector to display various stellar and physics-related experiences and bring outer space to schools’ libraries, camps, scouting groups and more. The product was invented back in 1977 by Philip Sadler and his class of middle school students in Lincoln, Massachusetts. ASHEBORO — An early-morning fiery crash in Asheboro has claimed the life of a local woman, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. At 6:25 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, troopers with the Highway Patrol were dispatched to a vehicle crash on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near Mountain Top Drive. According to a press release, 24-year-old Alvaro Cabrera Gudino, of Asheboro, was driving on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in a Honda minivan when she traveled off the right side of the road, struck a mailbox, a utility pole, and a tree. After impacting the tree, Gudino’s vehicle came to rest and caught fire. Gudino suffered serious injuries and was transported to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. ASHEBORO N.C. — A local teenager was airlifted following a crash yesterday evening that shutdown US-64, according to the Highway Patrol. Just after 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 28th, 2024, the State Highway Patrol was called to respond to a vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 64 near Loflin Pond Road.  According to a press release from the Highway Patrol, an 18-year-old driver in a 2011 Honda SUV attempted to turn left onto U.S. Highway 64 from the Dollar General PVA and collided with a 2020 Toyota Pickup. The teen driver was severely injured and was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. ASHEBORO N.C. — A U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Liberty in North Carolina was arrested overnight at a local park in Asheboro, accused of engaging in sexual activity with a minor. Late on Wednesday March 20th, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a local park past curfew. According to a press release from the Department, officers found a male, later identified as 27-year-old Eric Timothy Fitch with a 13-year-old juvenile female in the vehicle along with evidence that Fitch had engaged in sexual activity with the female. Detectives took over the investigation and just past 10 p.m. that night Fitch was arrested and charged with statutory rape of child under 15, two counts of statutory sex offense with child under 15, disc...
