At 5:57 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, the State Highway Patrol responded to the report of a crash that occurred on US 220 Business at Industrial Park Avenue in Randolph County. An 18-year-old driver of a 2022 Honda Accord passenger vehicle was traveling north on US 220 Business when they attempted to make a left turn onto Industrial Park Avenue from US 220. Chase Logan Fritz, 24, of Asheboro, N.C., was traveling south on US 220 Business operating a 2022 Kawasaki motorcycle and collided with the turning vehicle in the intersection. Fritz died on-scene. ASHEBORO N.C. - A city crew installing new sidewalk on E Academy St in Asheboro struck a gas line this afternoon, prompting a response from emergency crews. At around 2:30 PM on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, firefighters with the Asheboro Fire Department were dispatched to 205 E Academy St for a report of a gas leak. According to an official on the scene, as crews were working to install a new sidewalk, city employees were driving a wooden steak which caused a gas pipe to break. The Asheboro Fire Department closed off E Academy St between S Cox St and S Main St, for around fifteen minutes. Piedmont Natural Gas arrived on scene within only a few minutes and were able to shut off the leak. Emergency crews were able to re-open the road just before 3PM. No one was injured in the...

Chaplain Bill Hatfield with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office's has been coordinating efforts to assist Keaton’s Place with their community service project. Keaton’s Place, a recovery recourse center located in Asheboro says they aid in navigating the complex process of locating detoxification and rehabilitation facilities for those who are seeking to change their lives and free themselves from addiction to drugs or alcohol, according to the organization's website. ASHEBORO N.C. – The City of Asheboro presents Friday Night Bluegrass with the return of Just a Li’l Grace to the historic Sunset Theatre on Friday, February 17th beginning at 7:00pm. Friday Night Bluegrass is a monthly program of the Sunset Theatre that presents local as well as regional bluegrass talent on the third Friday of every month. This month’s concert will feature Just A Li’l Grace, anacoustic band focusing on bluegrass gospel music. Based in Chatham County, the band consists of Doug Stuart on guitar, his wife Stacey Stuart on bass, Lenward Camp on banjo, and Eddie Ingram on mandolin. ASHEBORO N.C. - A driver has been charged in connection with a hit and run accident after police say he struck a power pole and left the scene late last year. On December 26th, 2022, just before 3 AM an Officer with the Asheboro Police Department responded to South Park Street at West Kivett Street in reference to a report of a hit and run. When police arrived, they found a power pole at the corner of the intersection snapped in several pieces. The vehicle was still at the scene and when police ran the license plate on the vehicle through a database it came back as stolen from Ravenwood Drive in Asheboro. According to an online press release, on January 29th, 2023, the Sheriff Office's Criminal Investigations Division was called to investigate vandalism that occurred at the Randolph County Courthouse on Salisbury Street in Asheboro. Video surveillance of the incident captured the perpetrator, described as a black male, wearing black in color pants, a gray sweatshirt, red sneakers/boots, and a tan in color toboggan throwing rocks through several of the windows. ASHEBORO N.C. - A crash this morning has left one dead after a driver crashed head-on into another vehicle while traveling the wrong way on I-73/74. At approximately 10:10 AM, on January 31, 2023, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to reports of traffic crash on I-73 North of McDowell Road. Callers reported seeing a white Nissan Frontier traveling North in the Southbound Lane of I-73 immediately before the crash. When emergency personnel arrived on scene, they discovered that the Nissan Frontier had struck a Toyota Tacoma that was traveling Southbound. The driver of the Nissan Frontier, a 94-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. ASHEBORO N.C. - A traffic stop in Asheboro last week discovered evidence of a robbery and led to the arrest of a driver and a passenger. On January 18, 2023, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Doris Acres St. near Grantville Ln., in Asheboro. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, during a search of the vehicle, deputies located paraphernalia and US Currency along with an empty Domino’s Pizza deposit bag in the possession of one of the passengers, identified as Stephanie Nichole Langley. During the investigation, deputies discovered that the bag belonged to Dominos in Robbins. The Robbins Police Department was contacted and reported that a larceny had been reported by that business. [Scott Pelkey | North State Journal] ASHEBORO N.C. - This week, the Asheboro ABC Board has announced the availability of 1st and 2nd quarter 2023 grant funds for the treatment of alcoholism or substance abuse or for research or education on alcohol or substance abuse.  The grants are a part of a program established by state lawmakers under NC § 18B-805. That statute requires that at least seven percent (7%) of the gross receipts from the stores shall be spent for the treatment of alcoholism or substance abuse, or for research or education on alcohol or substance abuse.
