Acme News Archive ASHEBORO N.C. - Two juveniles were found occupying a stolen car that was involved in a chase with police earlier this week. According to a police report from the Asheboro Police Department on Aug 9th 2022, just after 2am in the morning, an officer attempted to pull over on S Fayetteville St near Lanier Ave. Police say that vehicle was reported stolen and linked to an attempted vehicle left. A brief chase through the back streets of Asheboro occurred and when the vehicle was stopped officers found two juveniles in the car. Police released the juveniles back to their parents, but plan to seek juvenile petitions against them at a later date. Reilly was the oldest male lion in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited institution. "He was so tolerant of his rambunctious offspring and was fiercely devoted to his lady lion, Mekita," said Zookeeper Beth Malott, who worked with Reilly for eight years. "Reilly was a one-of-a-kind soul, and his morning roars will be greatly missed." Reilly had been battling renal disease for several years, and with his advanced age and weakened physical state, the animal care team and veterinarians made the heart-wrenching, quality-of-life decision to euthanize him. According to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 5:00 pm deputies responded to awelfare check on Cable Creek Rd., in Asheboro. A press release says when deputies arrived a male subject exited the residence with a firearm before retreating into the residence, then fleeing out the back on foot, still armed. At around 2:39 am this morning the Asheboro Fire Department was dispatched to a home on S Main St near Maraduke Cir, after 911 callers reported flames shooting from the roof of a home. "Battalion 1 arrived to find a working fire involving a 2 story residential structure," said Samantha East, Public Information Officer with the Asheboro Fire Department in an email. "Crews were assigned fire attack and search. Fire attack was able to do an interior attack while utilizing Tower 1’s master stream on the exterior." ASHEBORO N.C. - Police are working to understand what led to a shooting last night in Asheboro that left a local man shot in the foot. On August 5th, 2022, at approximately 2am, patrol officers with the Asheboro Police Department were dispatched to a mobile home on Walnut Street, in reference to a gunshot wound. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department this morning, when officers arrived and entered the residence they located one white male victim, identified as Randal Clay Allred, with a gunshot wound to his right foot. Officers rendered aid to the victim, and he was transported by Randolph County EMS to a local medical facility. (ARCOC) – The Asheboro Rotary Club and the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce are joining together again to present the Field of Honor during Veteran’s Day weekend this year. From Friday, November 11, through Sunday, November 13, the baseball field at South Asheboro Middle School will be transformed into the Field of Honor with U.S. flags posted in perfect rows and columns in tribute of heroes. The public will be able to sponsor flags in recognition of their heroes, including veterans, active-duty service men and women, first responders, and any personal heroes. More information about buying flags, the opening and closing ceremonies, and sponsorships will be provided in the coming weeks.

On July 26th, 2022, the City of Asheboro held a special meeting to discuss ideas for improving access to the newly renovated Historic McCrary Ballpark. Among those ideas, an access road nicknamed "Power Alley" which would have connected Lexington Rd to Southway Rd, which received vocal opposition from nearby homeowners. Now, just a week after that meeting, any plans the city had to improve access from Lexington Rd are dead. On August 1st, 2022, just after 10pm, patrol officers with the Asheboro Police Department were dispatched to Frazier Park, located at 517 West Wainman Avenue, after receiving a call about shots fired in the area. When officers arrived, they located a juvenile and a male identified as Heleodoro Juarez-Garcia in the park.
