Ladder 1 at Asheboro Fire & Rescue Station 1 in 2020 (Archive Photo / Acme News) ASHEBORO N.C. - The City of Asheboro has authorized an offer to purchase land on Zoo Parkway for a new Fire Station and Emergency Operations Center with construction set to start as soon as next year.  At the City Council Meeting held on November 8th, 2023, council members voted unanimously to authorize $120,000 from the city’s general fund to make an offer to purchase 3.25 acres of land on Zoo Parkway at Crestview Church Rd.  That land would be used to build a new Fire Station and Emergency Operations Center which is needed to help keep up with increasing call volume and to ensure response times stay at or under five minutes now and into the future.  Those goals are especially i...

ASHEBORO N.C. – The city of Asheboro has announced its third Annual Gifting Tree Project, and registration is underway for a limited number of trees. Organized by the City of Asheboro's Cultural & Recreation Services, the Gifting Tree Project transforms Bicentennial Park into a dazzling Christmas tree display. Local families, schools, and organizations decorate their trees in a competition to win a donation (provided by Modern Toyota) to the nonprofit of their choice. Want to participate? ASHEBORO N.C. - Registration is now open for the annual Junior Amateur Golf Tournament in early August. The Asheboro Municipal Golf Course will be hosting the annual Junior Amateur Golf Tournament on August 5th and August 6th, 2023.  The tournament is open to any junior golfer between 7-18 years of age.  Participants will be divided into three age divisions that will be determined based on the number of entrants.  The entry fee is $25 for all players, which includes two rounds of golf (the number of holes in each round will be proportional to each age group) and winning trophies. ASHEBORO N.C. - A city crew installing new sidewalk on E Academy St in Asheboro struck a gas line this afternoon, prompting a response from emergency crews. At around 2:30 PM on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, firefighters with the Asheboro Fire Department were dispatched to 205 E Academy St for a report of a gas leak. According to an official on the scene, as crews were working to install a new sidewalk, city employees were driving a wooden steak which caused a gas pipe to break. The Asheboro Fire Department closed off E Academy St between S Cox St and S Main St, for around fifteen minutes. Piedmont Natural Gas arrived on scene within only a few minutes and were able to shut off the leak. Emergency crews were able to re-open the road just before 3PM. No one was injured in the...

On July 26th, 2022, the City of Asheboro held a special meeting to discuss ideas for improving access to the newly renovated Historic McCrary Ballpark. Among those ideas, an access road nicknamed "Power Alley" which would have connected Lexington Rd to Southway Rd, which received vocal opposition from nearby homeowners. Now, just a week after that meeting, any plans the city had to improve access from Lexington Rd are dead. ASHEBORO N.C. - On July 6th a marked patrol vehicle from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and a City of Asheboro utility vehicle were involved in a crash in Asheboro. On July 6th 2022, just before 11:30am, Asheboro Police and Fire Departments were called to the scene of a vehicle accident on N Fayetteville St near the Big Dipper restaurant. In that accident a marked patrol car from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and a pickup truck belonging to the City of Asheboro had collided as the patrol car was making a left hand turn across traffic. According to an accident report from the Asheboro Police Department, the deputy driving the patrol car said she did not see the oncoming pickup truck when making the left hand turn.
