ASHEBORO N.C. - A suspect is in the Randolph County Jail today awaiting court on several warrants, drug, and traffic charges related to a vehicle pursuit last week. According to a press release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on May 11th, 2023, deputies attempted to pull over a vehicle on Pisgah Covered Bridge Rd., in Asheboro. The driver refused to stop and instead accelerated away, beginning a vehicle pursuit with police. During that pursuit, a deputy was successful in getting the vehicle to stop using a "forced vehicle maneuver" designed to break the vehicle's traction, on their second attempt. FRANKLINVILLE N.C. - A head on collision on US 64 claimed the life of a Franklinville resident on Wednesday afternoon. Just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10th, 2023, emergency crews responded to a vehicle crash on US 64 near Iron Mountain Road. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Wanda Cox Allred, 74, of Franklinville, N.C., was traveling west on US 64 operating a 2019 Honda CR-V when a driver of a 2006 Mercedes Benz crossed the centerline, striking her vehicle head-on. Allred died on-scene. The driver of the Mercedes Benz suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro. ASHEBORO N.C. - A call about a suspicious vehicle turned into a pursuit that ended with a teen in jail facing a list of felony charges. On May 5th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to the area of Allred St. and West Main St., Franklinville, for a report of a suspicious vehicle. The caller provided a description of the occupants of the vehicle who had pulled over and were walking in the area. When deputies arrived, they spotted a male subject standing on the passenger side of the vehicle. "When the deputy turned on the vehicle spotlights, the male ran around the vehicle, entered the driver’s seat and drove off. Teen Driver Law Changes to Take Effect Monday, May 8

ROCKY MOUNT N.C. (NCDOT) – Upon passage of a bill by the North Carolina General Assembly, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is announcing changes to the graduated driver licensing (GDL) program for teens. Effective May 8, teen drivers will again need to have their Level 1 Limited Learner Permit for six months before being able to get their Level 2 Limited Provisional License. Teen drivers will still be required to: be at least 16 years old, log 60 hours of driving time, pass a road test and show printed proof of insurance in the teen driver’s name. The requirement to advance to Level 2 had been 12 months for most of the last 25 years since the GDL system was put into place in 1997. Not completely sure how to play or keep score – don’t worry. We will go over all the rules and provide all the equipment needed. The local league is available for men and women with the only restriction being that all participants need to be 50 years old or greater. Partners can be comprised of two males, two females or one male and one female. This league will take place on Tuesday mornings during the months of May and June. ASHEBORO N.C. - Four suspects who were found in a vacant home in Archdale were arrested last weekend and charged with breaking and entering. On April 29th, 2023, Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a burglary in progress on Zelma Blvd., in Archdale. According to information released by the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, when deputies arrived, they located and detained four suspects who were inside the residence. When deputies contacted the property owner, they advised they were in the process of removing the home and that no one should be inside. ASHEBORO N.C. - Deputies located a man with multiple warrants sleeping in a barn in Randleman earlier this week. On April 16, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Stanton Farm Rd. and Hockett Dairy Rd., in Randleman, to locate wanted subject, Steven Lamar Hughes, Jr. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, Hughes was located sleeping in the loft of a barn and was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served with three orders for arrest out of Davidson County and received a $7,500 secured bond. ASHEBORO N.C. - Starting today, April 17th, 2023, the KRAX Weather Radar operated by NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh, NC, will be unavailable for approximately two weeks for a critical upgrade. The radar is going offline for planned maintenance as technicians refurbish and replace the pedestal, a critical component necessary for antenna rotation and positioning. "The components are extremely heavy and will require the radome to be removed by crane and replaced when the work is completed," said the NWS office in a press release. "The radar and pedestal were designed to last 25 years, and these components have exceeded their projected life span." On April 11th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Waynick Meadow Rd., Asheboro, in reference to a residential fire. When deputies arrived fire crews on scene had already contained the fire. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, deputies had responded to two earlier calls at the same residence for arguments between persons living at the address. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the misuse of opioid medications an epidemic. Proper disposal of expired, unused, and unneeded medications from the home is a crucial element of a strategy for promoting public health and safety. Each day, approximately 2,500 teenagers use prescription drugs to get high for the first time.
