[Acme News Archive Photo] ASHEBORO N.C. - Two separate school bus crashes on October 12th, 2023, raised questions online about the safety of school buses, so we decided to look at the data to see just how safe children who ride the bus to school are on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) school bus accidents account for less than 1% of all traffic fatalities. While that 'less than 1%' is a national figure, here in NC, the data backs up that number. Using crash report numbers from the N.C. sandsun / Adobe Stock TRINITY N.C. - Troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol say no one was injured in a school bus crash involving a Randolph County School Bus early this morning in Trinity. According to a press release from the Highway Patrol, at 7:41 a.m. on Thursday, October 12th, 2023, Troopers responded to the report of a crash involving an elementary school bus operated by Randolph County School System at the intersection of Edgar Road at Pliney Farlow Road. Troopers say their investigation found that the driver of a Hoda Civic attempted to make a left turn from Pliney Farlow Road onto Edgar Road but failed to yield for the bus causing the vehicles to collide at the intersection. Several Injured In Accident Involving Uwharrie Charter School Bus [UPDATED]

ASHEBORO NC - A driver and three children are at the hospital this morning after an accident involving a school bus in Davidson County. According to the NC Highway Patrol the accident occured at around 7:30 AM on Highway 109 near Mount Zion Church Road. Troopers say it appears that a driver crossed the center line and struck a school bus for Uwharrie Charter Academy head on. Seven children were on the bus at the time of the crash, and three of those were taken to the hospital, and are with family at this time. The driver of the passenger car was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Troopers have cleared the scene and Hwy 109 is back open at this time.
