Unconscious Man Found Behind Wheel With Gun Facing Charges

ASHEBORO NC – A man is facing charges after police say they found him passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle with a gun in his lap.

According to information posted by the Randolph County Sherriff’s Office, on April 12, 2021, the deputies responded to assist troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in reference to a male driver who was passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in the area of US HWY 311 in Sophia.
When officers arrived they say the found the man passed out behind the wheel with a firearm in his lap. Officers say they approached and shook the vehicle in an attempt to wake the driver but he still appeared to be unconscious. Officers were able to remove the firearm from the male’s lap and secure it while they continued to attempt to wake him.

Once awake, the male was identified as Zackery Lee Yarborough who according to police is a convicted felon. A search of the vehicle officers say they located illegal substances and paraphernalia. Yarborough was arrested for DWI and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center by the Highway Patrol. Deputies also charged Yarborough for Felony Possession of Firearm by a Felon, Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was given a $5,000 secured bond on the charges from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office. A first appearance was set for April 12, 2021, in Randolph County District Court.
