Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events in Randolph County

ASHEBORO N.C. – The third Monday of January each year the nation looks back at the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work advocating for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement to protest racial discrimination in federal and state law. This year the federal holiday falls on January 15th, here is a list of events happening in Randolph County.

Eastside Improvement Association Community Breakfast

The Eastside Improvement Association will host its annual Martin L King Jr Community Breakfast on the morning of the 15th starting at 8:00 a.m. at the Central Gymnasium (621 Franks St in Asheboro). A panel of special guests including Mr. Busta Brown, Dr. Cori Burkett, Mr. Brandon Price, Ms. Centerra Harris, and Mr. Jay Graves will speak. The event is free and open to the public.

MLK Day March

The Asheboro/Randolph County Branch of the NAACP is honoring Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 15th with its 24th MLK March. The March is slated to start at approximately 10:30 a.m. at Central Gym, directly after the Eastside Improvement Association Community Breakfast. The route will be from Central Gym to the Old Courthouse.

“This March signifies that we are not giving up,” said Clyde Foust Jr., President of the Asheboro/Randolph County Branch of the NAACP. “This is a tradition in Asheboro. It amplifies the message that the fight for civil rights is continuous, and it inspires a renewed commitment to fostering a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background. It is important to recognize that, while progress has been made, there is still work to be done to address systemic inequalities.”

Rides will be available for those who want to participate in the March but are unable to walk the distance. There will be water and hot chocolate available, and speakers at the Courthouse. The public is invited to participate.

Special Services & Other Events

Dr. Nachia Revels will speak at a special service at First Pentecostal Church in Asheboro on Monday January 15th, 2024, at 6 p.m.

Special guests Alex & Alexus Paige will speak at Ferree’s Chapel UMC in Randleman on January 15th at 9 a.m. This service will also be live-streamed via Zoom.
