Suspect arrested after fleeing from police, attempting to report car stolen

ASHEBORO N.C. — Video evidence led to the arrest of a suspect attempting to report his car stolen after fleeing from police, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

On March 25th, 2024, at around 9 p.m., a Deputy with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over a vehicle near the intersection of Kamerin St. and Caudle Rd. in Randleman.

According to a press release, that vehicle quickly turned into a driveway, turned off its headlights, and jumped out of the driver’s door and fled on foot behind the residence. The Sheriff’s Office says there was a short foot pursuit, but the officer returned to the vehicle to check for passengers and call-in backup.

Video footage which captured the suspect walking behind a residence. Using that video police broadcast a description of the suspect, including the clothing he was wearing, to officers in the area and later helped police identify the suspect as Jameal Shufon Matthews.

Police say an inventory search of the vehicle locating illegal substances, an open container of alcohol, and paraphernalia.

Shortly after the foot chase, Randolph County 9-1-1 received a call from Matthews who wanted to report his vehicle stolen. When Matthews arrived, police say he was wearing the same clothing seen in the video. 

Matthews arrested and taken to the Randolph County Jail where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of marijuana >0.5-1.5 oz., misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia, misdemeanor open container violation, misdemeanor driving while license revoked, and a window tinting violation and issued no bond.
