ASHEBORO N.C. – Three people were transported to local hospitals, two with serious life-threatening injuries, after a vehicle crash on NC 42 this morning.
At 9:11 a.m. on Friday, February 10th, 2023, emergency crews from East Side Fire Dept, Franklinville Fire Dept, Ash-Rand Rescue, Randolph County EMS, and Sheriff’s Office along with Troppers from the NC Highway Patrol responded to the report of a crash that occurred on NC 42 near Hayfield Drive.
In a post on Facebook, the East Side Fire Department said that Rescue-24 arrived to find a three-vehicle accident on Highway 42 S. just south of Hayfield Dr. Drivers of two vehicles were pinned and in serious condition.
According to a press release by the NC Highway Patrol, Karissa Dawn Walraven, 31, of Ramseur, N.C., was traveling south on NC 42, in a 2011 GMC Acadia SUV when she crossed left of center on NC 42 and sideswiped one vehicle before crashing head-on into another.
Walraven and the driver struck head on suffered serious life-threatening injuries in the crash. Walraven was transported to Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The driver struck head-on was flown from the scene to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
The driver who was sideswiped suffered minor injuries and was transported to Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
Troopers say the crash is still under investigation and it is unclear as to why Walraven crossed the center line, striking the other two vehicles. Charges are pending against Walraven.
Highway 42 was shut down between Fairview Farm Rd. and Old NC Highway 13/Grantville Ln during the incident but has since been reopened. Troopers cleared the scene at 10:56 a.m.
