Two Arrested for Stealing from Store, Drive by Shooting in Front of Police

ASHEBORO N.C. – Two adult suspects who allegedly stole from a local convince store and later conducted a drive by shooting in front of two police officers, were arrested last week according to police reports.

On Tuesday July 18th, 2023, at around 9:30 pm, police were notified of a larceny at the Quik Chek store on Sunset Ave in Asheboro.

Before the police could respond, two officers working an off-duty detail at Coleridge Apartments called in shots fired after witnessing an individual hanging out of the window firing a pistol towards Kemp Blvd, according to a police report.

Officers raced to the area and according to a police report the driver of the vehicle attempted to evade police by turning off the lights of the car lights and passing other vehicles.

Within a few minutes police were able to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Coleridge St and MLK, where the occupants were pulled out of the vehicle at gun point and detained by police.

No inures were reported as a result of the shooting or chase.

Once the suspects had been detained, an officer responded to the Quik Chek to investigate the larceny. A store clerk says four males entered the store and stole beer and an employee had seen one of the suspects was carrying a firearm.

When police reviewed the surveillance footage, they say the four males were the same individuals the officers had detained from the vehicle for the drive-by shooting.

Police identified two of the individuals as 18-year-old Ja`Kari Mcrae and 18-year-old Mehki Evans, both from Asheboro.
