ASHEBORO N.C. – A young child is recovering at a local hospital after being accidentally shot while he and his grandfather were packing up from hunting last weekend.

According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on May 7th, 2022, deputies, and first responders were called to the area of Dawson Miller Rd., and US 220 Business in Asheboro for an accidental gunshot wound involving a juvenile.

When deputies arrived the juvenile was being treated by Fire Dept and EMS personnel. The Sheriff’s Office says deputies learned that the juvenile and his grandfather had been turkey hunting and when they were packing up to leave the grandson had gotten into the front passenger area of the vehicle. The grandfather was loading the remaining items into the rear of the vehicle. When the grandfather shut the door, he heard a gun go off. He then realized the juvenile had been shot.

With no cell reception in the area, he drove until he obtained reception and called 911. Following instructions from the 911 operator’s instructions the grandfather drove to met an ambulance at Dawson Miller Rd., and US 220 Business.

The juvenile was transported to Randolph Health and then airlifted by UNC Air Care. Detectives and CSI Technicians responded to investigate. The incident has been deemed accidental. No charges will be filed.

The juvenile is recovering in the hospital.

EDITOR’S NOTE

An earlier version of this article used an incorrect age for the victim stating that they were 17-years-old. We do not know how this age made it into the notes on our assignment board. We have made corrections to this article to remove the age all together since we are not able to confirm the exact age. We apologize for this error.
