[UPDATED] Asheboro Police Investigating Shooting

[ASHEBORO N.C.] July 7th 2022, 11PM – Investigators are gathering evidence and trying to piece together what led to a shooting in Asheboro this evening.

Just after 8pm, police, firefighters, and paramedics were dispatched to Cross St for a call about a gunshot wound. Within minutes Randolph County 911 received a 2nd call for a gunshot wound on nearby Frank St.

Randolph County EMS transported and unknown number of people from the scene. Randolph Hospital’s emergency room was temporarily placed on lockdown with Deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office stationed out front and on White Oak st.

At this time we have no confirmed information about the number of people injured or if any one has been arrested. We have reached out to several agencies for more information and will post an update as more information is made available.


[UPDATE] July 8th 2022 9AM – Today we are learning more information about the shooting yesterday evening that sent two people to the hospital after more than two dozens shots rang out in an Asheboro neighborhood.

On Thursday, July 7, 2022, Randolph County 911 received 2 separate calls reporting a victim of a gunshot wound, the first at 7:57pm from the 800 block of Franks St, and the second at 7:59pm on Cross St. (A third 911 call hours later around 9:30 pm was received from an address on Stowe Ave, which was believed to also be connected to the incident.)

Officers arrived on scene and located two victims, Darreus McNeill and Jacob Waddell, who had both been shot in the back according to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department. Both victims were transported by ambulance to an out-of-county medical facility. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Detectives and CSI responded to the scene to begin the investigation and located “in excess of two dozen spent shell casings”. Evidence obtained at the scene suggests that some type of altercation occurred between people in the yard of the residence and individuals in a slowly-passing vehicle. A short time later, the vehicle returned to the scene and an occupant got out and opened fire with a pistol.

Randolph County 911, using information from the 3rd 911 caller was able to issue a BOLO (Be-On-The-Lookout) Alert for a suspect vehicle. Shortly after the shooting, a Trooper with the NC State Highway Patrol stopped a speeding vehicle on US Hwy 64 West. According to the Asheboro Police Department the Trooper found the driver who police identified as 23-year-old Khalil Jabri Cuthrell, in possession of a felony amount of marijuana and a handgun that had recently been fired.

Assisting Asheboro Police Deputies with the Randolph County Sheriff’s office responded to meet the Trooper to collect evidence, seize the car, and transport Cuthrell to the Randolph County Jail.

Cuthrell was given a $10,000 bond on the drug offenses and no bond on the two counts of attempted murder.
