Photo provided by NC Zoo ASHEBORO NC (NC ZOO) - The North Carolina Zoo is excited to announce an African bull elephant, Louie, is joining the Zoo’s herd. Louie arrived May 25, and he is settling in well to his new habitat. Louie is an 18-year-old male African elephant, born April 30, 2003, at the Toledo Zoo in Ohio. On June 22, 2017, he went to the Omaha Zoo in Nebraska as part of their breeding program. Louie’s move to the North Carolina Zoo is a recommendation from the African Elephant Species Survival Plan (SSP) through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The gradual process of introducing Louie to the Zoo’s herd is already underway. ASHEBORO NC - Randolph Health has announced they will again be easing visitor restrictions at Randolph Hospital. The new visitation guidelines began on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at 7 a.m. This is the second time this year that Randolph Health has scaled back restrictions put in place since it began to accept low-level COVID-19 patients in December of last year.  The new guidelines extend the number of hours visitors are allowed, increase the number of visitors allowed at one time, and add new rules for maternity patients. Dozens of Miles of Central NC Roads Set for Makeover

RALEIGH NC (NCDOT) – Nearly 70 miles of Central North Carolina roads will be resurfaced thanks to three contracts recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The milling, resurfacing and shoulder grading projects are scheduled to be complete by the summer of 2022. Two of the contracts cover nearly 55 miles of secondary roads in Chatham County and were awarded to Fred Smith Company with low bids of $2.3 million and $2.5 million. The other contract, covering nearly 12 miles of roadway in Randolph County including three sections of U.S. 64, was also awarded to Fred Smith Company with a low bid of just over $2 million. ASHEBORO NC - An Asheboro man is facing a long list of charges after a traffic stop for a possible DUI where police say they found evidence connecting him to several other crimes in the stolen car he was driving.  According to a press release by the Randolph County Sherriff's Office on May 23, 2021, shortly after midnight, the deputies responded to Oakland Ave in Asheboro after receiving a call about a breaking/entering that had occurred earlier. The deputies met with the victim who gave them a list of missing items which included several banking cards. Later that night at around 4:00 am, deputies were asked to assist the North Carolina Highway Patrol on a traffic stop. Troopers had stopped a driver for a possible DUI on I-73/74. ASHEBORO NC - A suspected prowler is in jail after being shot while trying to attack a homeowner Saturday afternoon. According to a press release by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, On May 29, 2021, deputies responded to a report of a prowler in the area of Post Rd in Tabernacle. A homeowner had called 911 to report a possible prowler and told police that a man was trespassing on their property and was told to leave.   After calling 911 the homeowner noticed the interior lights to their vehicle were on and went to check it out. According to a press release once outside, the suspect threatened and assaulted the victim who was armed. The victim shot the suspect and the suspect fled the scene on foot. "We can now report that we have restarted our entire pipeline system and that product delivery has commenced to all markets we serve. Following this restart, it will take several days for the product delivery supply chain to return to normal. ASHEBORO NC - A local man is facing ten felony charges after a tip to the Sheriff's Office. According to a press release, The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) received information from an international source that an individual by the name of Randall Keith Allen was possessing/distributing numerous child pornography files. That tip started an investigation and on May 4, 2021, detectives seized digital devices from Allen's residence. On May 11, 2021, warrants for Allen’s arrest were obtained for ten counts of Felony Second Degree Exploitation of a Minor.
