ASHEBORO N.C. - The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Triad for tonight. According to the forecast posted this morning rain is likely before 9pm, then rain and snow between 9pm and 1am, possibly turning to  snow after 1am. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. (Scott Pelkey / Acme News Archive) ASHEBORO NC - Just over a year after a vehicle chase ended in a fatal shooting at the NC Zoo, the Randolph County District's Attorney office has completed its investigation clearing the deputies of any wrongdoing. In the early morning hours of Jan. 7th, 2020, the suspect, twenty-one-year-old Troy Chase Caster, who was being sought by police in Rowan county for allegedly robbing a female cab driver at gunpoint led deputies on a chase from Rowan County through Stanly County and Davidson County and into Randolph County. The chase at times went in excess of 100 mph. Deputies reported that Caster was firing shots at the deputies before driving toward the Africa entrance of the NC Zoo. Traffic Stop Finds Fugitive, Guns, Counterfeit Cash

Tevin Kade Guillory ASHEBORO NC - A wanted fugitive out of Louisiana was arrested and faces additional charges. According to a press release on January 21, 2021, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Team conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 85. Deputies searched the vehicle which led to the seizure of a firearm and counterfeit currency. The passenger of the vehicle, Tevin Kade Guillory, was also found to be a fugitive out of Louisiana. Guillory was placed under arrest and transported to Randolph County Detention Center where he was charged with Felony Possession of 5+ Counterfeit Instrument and Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. LIBERTY, NC (LIBERTY PD - PRESS RLEEASE) [ARCHIVED]– On January 20, 2021, members from the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division and Liberty Police Department raided Bonus Spins, located at 218 North Greensboro Street, Liberty, N.C. The location was suspected to be operating an illegal casino and gaming machines.  ALE’s Gaming Section and the Liberty Police Department started a joint investigation after local law enforcement received multiple complaints from community members about illegal gaming and gambling. Liberty Police Chief requested the ALE Gaming Section to assist their agency with the approval of the District Attorney’s Office. Seventeen-year-old Payton is being relocated from the Memphis Zoo as part of its breeding efforts. Payton was named after Walter Payton – the late running back for the Chicago Bears NFL team. He was born on was born Nov. 8, 2003, at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago but was moved to the Memphis Zoo in 2006. “Seeing Payton leave is bittersweet. He has been a part of our lives at Memphis Zoo for the last 15 years,” said Amanda Moses, communications specialist for the Memphis Zoo. “He is special to Memphis Zoo, and to the keepers and researchers who have worked with him. Charles Vernon Herbert ASHEBORO NC (RCSO) [ARCHIVED] - On January 13, 2021, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Vice and Narcotics Division concluded an investigation related to the distribution of Cocaine in the Liberty area. Detectives, along with the assistance of the Randolph County Emergency Response Team and Liberty Police Department, executed a search warrant on S. Murphy St, the residence of Charles Vernon Herbert. During the search, Detectives located and seized a Trafficking amount of Cocaine, items of drug paraphernalia and US Currency. Suspect In Liberty Shooting Surrenders To Police

LIBERTY NC (RCSO) [ARCHIVED] - On Thursday, January 7, 2021 at approximately 8:30 pm the Liberty Police Department responded to 532 W Swannanoa Ave in reference to a possible shooting. Officers located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim was airlifted to UNC Hospital, treated and eventually released. Stewart Whitaker After asking for help in locating a suspect, Stewart Whitaker, who resides at 532 W Swannanoa Ave, has surrendered himself to law enforcement officers and has been charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, Inflicting Serious Injury and Attempted Murder. Track Repairs Causing Traffic Headaches In Asheboro

ASHEBORO NC [ARCHIVED] - Norfolk Southern began repairs on tracks through downtown Asheboro Monday. Crossings between Church St and Fayetteville St at Academy St, Wainman St, and Kivett St were closed on Monday and Tuesday. This work is part of Norfolk Southern’s annual maintenance program to ensure safe and efficient operations in the communities we serve, said Rachel Bradshaw a Manager Media Relations with the Norfolk Southern Corporation.  According to an e-mail from Bradshaw on Tuesday evening work is expected to be complete in the next day or two, depending on weather and unforeseen delays.

Man Found Walking In Road Charged With DUI And Drug Charges

John Allen Harrington  ASHEBORO NC (RCSO) [ARCHIVED] - On January 10, 2020, while the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling the Tobacco Road and Old Glenola Road area of Trinity, deputies located a male subject in the middle of the roadway, walking out in front of traffic. Upon investigation, the subject was identified as John Allen Harrington, who had been involved in a single car vehicle accident. His car was located in a wooded area nearby. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, drug paraphernalia and cocaine were located. Harrington was processed for the driving while impaired by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Harrington was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was taken before a magistrate who found probable cause for Felony Possessio...
