ASHEBORO N.C. - The Asheboro Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own today. Chris Hoover was with the department for 24 years rising to the rank of Battalion Chief while also a member of the Tabernacle Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, and Ash-Rand Rescue. Hoover sadly lost his battle with COVID-19 on January 8th 2022. On Sunday firefighters with Asheboro made the trip up to UNC Medical Center to bring back his casket. According to several police reports from the Asheboro Police Department, their VICE unit along with agents from NC Alcohol Law Enforcement conducted undercover buys of alcohol using an underage operative over a three day span from Dec 6th through Dec 8th 2021. The operation was a part of the departments ABC Law Enforcement Service contract with the Asheboro ABC Board which states the department must conduct underage compliance checks at no less than 25% of ABC permitted businesses in the city each calendar year. ASHEBORO N.C. — As fast as it came, it left. After a week of unusually warm weather, rain, strong winds and the first snowfall of the year brought headaches throughout Randolph County. The system responsible for todays snow was expected to drop some wintery mix mostly in the northern parts of the triad turned out to be stronger than expected according to Scotty Powell, a Meteorologist with Carolina Weather Group. "So the precipitation was a little heavier which allowed colder air to the surface. So that is why some areas was able to see snow that wasn't necessarily supposed to" said Powell. Overnight heavy rains and high winds downed trees and knocked out power. While the snow continues to fall, rain and high winds are the primary concern today. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for Randolph County until 4 p.m. Monday. (sima / Adobe Stock) ASHEBORO N.C. — After a week and a half of unusually warm temperatures that had many of us were checking our calendar to make sure it said December, temperatures are set to plunge Sunday night with even a possible chance to see some snow Monday morning. According to a forecast from the National Weather Service in Raleigh, Sunday highs are expected to be around 69° F with lows Sunday night plunging down to 32° F. Monday forecasters are calling for a 30% chance of rain and/or snow followed by sunny conditions with a high of 45° F. Staff relocated the 9-year-old grizzly from the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona, based on a recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Ronan is settling into his new habitat in the North America continent area of the Zoo. Since this past summer, the grizzly bear habitat has remained empty. That followed the death of Tommo, a beloved grizzly bear who lived at the Zoo for 26 years. The car manufacture said today they will invest 1.29 billion dollars in building the facility which once constructed will begin producing batteries for Toyota’s hybrid electric vehicles starting as soon as 2025. ASHEBORO, N.C. (NC ZOO) – - The North Carolina Zoo is pleased to announce it has once again received the honor of accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Every five years, the Zoo is required to go through the entire application process to retain its accreditation. The AZA awarded accreditation to the Zoo following a rigorous inspection visit earlier in the year. ASHEBORO NC - The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a freeze warning from 2 AM to 10 AM on Friday. Temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected in Randolph and surrounding counties. Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. The National Weather Service says now is the time to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
