Department of Transportation is urging teens to slow down, avoid distractions when driving, and buckle up because this is the deadliest time of year for teen drivers. Memorial Day starts the 100 deadliest days of the year for teenage drivers. Dozens of Miles of Central NC Roads Set for Makeover

RALEIGH NC (NCDOT) – Nearly 70 miles of Central North Carolina roads will be resurfaced thanks to three contracts recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The milling, resurfacing and shoulder grading projects are scheduled to be complete by the summer of 2022. Two of the contracts cover nearly 55 miles of secondary roads in Chatham County and were awarded to Fred Smith Company with low bids of $2.3 million and $2.5 million. The other contract, covering nearly 12 miles of roadway in Randolph County including three sections of U.S. 64, was also awarded to Fred Smith Company with a low bid of just over $2 million. ASHEBORO NC - With spring well underway in North Carolina, nice weather brings with it the things North Carolinaians dred, pollen and road construction.  According to a press release by NCDOT, they have awarded 4 contracts to repair 70 miles of roadways in central North Carolina, with many of those repairs here in Randolph County.  The projects call for milling and resurfacing and in most locations shoulder grading or reconstruction. They are all either getting underway or set to begin as early as May 1. The contracts for Randolph County are: 23.4 miles along seven sections of U.S. 64 and eight sections of secondary roads. LIBERTY NC.(NC DOT PRESS RELEASE)- State transportation maintenance crews need to close a section of N.C. 49 in Liberty for about two weeks to conduct an emergency replacement of a storm drain. The drain failed where it passes under the highway near South Valley Street on the eastern side of the town. Starting Monday, traffic will be detoured to follow East Dameron Avenue/Silk Hope Liberty Road, Hinshaw Shop Road and Staley Store Road/Town Country Road to access points on either side of the closure. ASHEBORO NC - A total of ten vehicles were involved in three separate, but related crashes, this morning on I-73 near Vision Drive. According to a press release by the NC Highway Patrol, at 6:19 AM on Monday, March 1st, 2021, troopers responded to I-73 near Vision Drive to a report of multiple vehicle accidents.  According to an official statement, the incident started when Ronald Wheeler, 60, of Albemarle N.C., was traveling north in a 2012 Peterbilt tractor-trailer in the left lane. (Trexler Trucking, Inc. is listed as the registered owner). Deizer Hernandez, 27, of Biscoe N.C., was traveling north in a 2005 Nissan passenger car in the right lane. ASHEBORO NC - The threat of freezing rain, black ice, and power outages tonight has prompted the National Weather Service in Raleigh to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for Randolph County. According to meteorologists, a mix of rain and freezing drizzle will taper off tonight around 9 PM. Ice from this wintery mix will stick around as overnight temperatures hover around freezing. This will likely result inslick/icy spots and black ice, especially on bridges and elevated roads overnight through late Sunday morning. Combined with patchy fog this could create especially hazardous travel conditions. Through-out the day Saturday Emergency crews have responded to an estimated 20 vehicle accidents in Randolph County. Track Repairs Causing Traffic Headaches In Asheboro

ASHEBORO NC [ARCHIVED] - Norfolk Southern began repairs on tracks through downtown Asheboro Monday. Crossings between Church St and Fayetteville St at Academy St, Wainman St, and Kivett St were closed on Monday and Tuesday. This work is part of Norfolk Southern’s annual maintenance program to ensure safe and efficient operations in the communities we serve, said Rachel Bradshaw a Manager Media Relations with the Norfolk Southern Corporation.  According to an e-mail from Bradshaw on Tuesday evening work is expected to be complete in the next day or two, depending on weather and unforeseen delays.
