Late Approval of State Budget to Impact Upcoming Tax Season

Department of Revenue (NC DOR) announced that they won’t begin processing 2021 tax year returns until mid-February, several weeks after the start of the tax season. In a press release NC DOR says the delay is due to the late approval of the state budget, which included multiple changes to the state’s tax law. The later start date allows NC DOR time to complete the updates for new tax laws for commercial tax preparation software. You may be able to submit your state taxes at the same time as your federal taxes but only if your tax preparation software has been updated for the upcoming year. NC DOR says early submissions will be considered as filed on the date transmitted, even though there will be a delay in processing. ...

The North Carolina Zoo will host their annual Halloween event “Boo at the NC Zoo” two weekends in October this year. Boo will be held Saturdays and Sundays on Oct. 16, 17, 23, and 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on all days. Boo at the NC Zoo is a family-friendly daytime event and socially distanced for everyone's fun and safety. There will be trick-or-treating at stations throughout the park, a souvenir bag, live entertainment, animal encounters, Halloween-themed photos, and costume contests. ASHEBORO NC - Ken Jennings, the man who won 74 consecutive game of Jeopardy! is set to speak in Asheboro this weekend. A recent rule change removed the five consecutive games limit for winners which led to Jennings going on a 74-game victory streak winning an estimated $2.52 million. In 2020, he beat out Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer in the “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time." Jennings went on tp become a Jeopardy! consulting producer and authored 12 books, including “Brainiac,” about his time on Jeopardy!. With the first storms already brewing weather experts are saying this year's seasons will be another active one.  NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is calling for a 60% chance of an above-normal season and only a 10% chance of a below-normal season. Thankfully, experts do not think we will see the historic level of storm activity we saw in 2020. Forecasters say they expect anywhere from 13 to 20 named storms, of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes with 3 to 5 of those becoming major hurricanes at Category 3 or higher.
