Haji, three years old and weighing 400 pounds, came from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans as a companion for the Zoo's female lion Mekita, 13. The Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) Lions Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommended the pairing. Mekita's last mate—23-year-old Reilly—died in August 2022, leaving her as the Zoo's only lion. Reilly lived at the Zoo for 21 years, spending most of his time as Mekita's mate. ASHEBORO N.C. - A suspect who allegedly robbed a McDonalds in Asheboro didn't make it far before being arrested last weekend. According to a police report from the Asheboro Police Department, on Sunday, Febuary 19th, 2023, just after 9 pm, officers responded to the McDonalds at 773 W Dixie Dr for a report of a robbery in progress. An employee told officers that a black male wearing white shirt, black hoodie, and blue jeans had entered the business and stolen an unknown amount of cash and they believed the male was armed with a handgun. RCSO: January Search Warrant in Asheboro finds Drugs

ASHEBORO N.C. - A search warrant executed last month by the Randolph County Sheriff's Office found drugs and led to the arrest of one person. According to a press release, on January 20th, 2023, the Sheriff’s Office Vice and Narcotics Division searched a residence at 935 Teresa Way in Asheboro. During the search, detectives located and seized Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, Suboxone and items of drug paraphernalia. As a result, Pamela Beth McDuffie was transported to Randolph County Jail where she was booked on multiple felony drug charges. Work Crew in Asheboro Installing Sidewalk Hit Gas Line

ASHEBORO N.C. - A city crew installing new sidewalk on E Academy St in Asheboro struck a gas line this afternoon, prompting a response from emergency crews. At around 2:30 PM on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, firefighters with the Asheboro Fire Department were dispatched to 205 E Academy St for a report of a gas leak. According to an official on the scene, as crews were working to install a new sidewalk, city employees were driving a wooden steak which caused a gas pipe to break. The Asheboro Fire Department closed off E Academy St between S Cox St and S Main St, for around fifteen minutes.
