ASHEBORO N.C. - A driver is facing a laundry list of charges after police say they found her barely breathing behind the wheel of an SUV last week, after she struck 2 street signs and part of a convenience store on Sunset Ave. According to police reports from the Asheboro Police Department on Wednesday July 13th just before 3:30am, officers responded to 509 Sunset Ave in Asheboro for a report of a suspicious vehicle. When officers arrived they say they located a gray SUV running, with its lights next to a dumpster in a grassy area next the the Quik Chek. Officers noted seeing a pillar from the front awning of the business that had been hit and knocked over by the vehicle. ASHEBORO N.C. - An Asheboro man was killed in a fiery single vehicle accident overnight according to the NC Highway Patrol. At 10:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 7th, 2022, the State Highway Patrol responded to the report of a crash that occurred on Bell Simmons Road near US 220 Business in Randolph County. According to Master Trooper Brian Martin, Troop D Public Information Officer, 69-year-old Michael Ray Cranford of Asheboro, N.C., was traveling west on Bell Simmons Road in a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero SUV. Cranford traveled off the road to the left and struck a tree when Cranford’s vehicle caught fire. Cranford was unrestrained and ejected during the collision and later died on scene. ASHEBORO N.C. - On July 6th a marked patrol vehicle from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and a City of Asheboro utility vehicle were involved in a crash in Asheboro. On July 6th 2022, just before 11:30am, Asheboro Police and Fire Departments were called to the scene of a vehicle accident on N Fayetteville St near the Big Dipper restaurant. In that accident a marked patrol car from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and a pickup truck belonging to the City of Asheboro had collided as the patrol car was making a left hand turn across traffic. According to an accident report from the Asheboro Police Department, the deputy driving the patrol car said she did not see the oncoming pickup truck when making the left hand turn. Just after 8pm, police, firefighters, and paramedics were dispatched to Cross St for a call about a gunshot wound. Within minutes Randolph County 911 received a 2nd call for a gunshot wound on nearby Frank St. Randolph County EMS transported and unknown number of people from the scene. Randolph Hospital's emergency room was temporarily placed on lockdown with Deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff's Office stationed out front and on White Oak st. According to Samantha East, Public Information Officer with the Asheboro Fire Department at 10:42 pm, crews with the Asheboro Fire Department, along with Randolph County EMS were paged out to a structure fire at 1303 Uwharrie St. Officers with the Asheboro Police Department in the area reported heavy smoke billowing from windows of the home when they arrived. ASHEBORO N.C. - Just after 5:30pm the Asheboro Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke alarm at 857 Albemarle Rd, a vacant structure between the Quality Inn and Roadway Inn (former Motel 6). When firefighters arrived the reported a commercial structure with smoke showing from the structure. An intal search was conducted the building was reported clear. Within 30-45 mins crews were ventilating the building to remove the smoke. No injuries were reported and the cause is unknown at this time. ASHEBORO N.C. - What started as a call for a possible overdose in Asheboro ended with two people arrested, a gun seized, a stolen car recovered, all after a vehicle chase. On June 30, 2022 at around 6pm emergency crews and police were called to a possible overdose in the parking lot of the Randolph Mall. The 911 caller stated two subjects were slumped over inside a vehicle, which was parked in front of Belks. According to Assistant Chief of Police Robbie Brown with the Asheboro Police Department, officers arrived and located the vehicle. "While attempting to wake up the two occupants, inside the vehicle, officers noticed a firearm in the driver’s lap.
