ASHEBORO NC – Three people are in jail this morning, two of them facing murder charges in connection with a body that was found in a wooded area in Asheboro earlier this month. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at approximately 10:27 PM, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Burns Street for a possible deceased person. When officers arrived they located a deceased male in a wooded area. Detectives were called to the scene and began an investigation. On Monday, September 27, 2021, the victim was positively identified as 64 years Randy Dean Hayden. ASHEBORO NC (CITY OF ASHEBORO) - United Way of Randolph County, in partnership with the City of Asheboro and the North Carolina Department of Commerce Rural Economic Development Division, is pleased to announce a program to provide temporary rent, mortgage or utility payment assistance to households who have suffered economic hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding for the program was made available through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the federal CARES Act of 2020. Eligible households must be located within the City of Asheboro Corporate Limits. Applicants will need to complete an application and provide documentation of an economic hardship related to COVID-19. Everyone from our vendors, attendees, sponsors, and downtown merchants have been affected by this pandemic. Ongoing discussions have been difficult and complex. Sadly, we have ultimately decided that it is in the best interest of the community to cancel the 2021 Fall Festival, October 2 – 3, 2021, due to COVID-19 for the second year in a row. ASHEBORO - An altercation on Albemarle Road involving a gun triggered a lock down at two Asheboro schools. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department, on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at approximately 2:25 PM, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to the 500 block of Albemarle Road after receiving a call about an armed person. The callers reported an altercation between multiple people, with at least one who was armed with a handgun. Asheboro High School, South Asheboro Middle School were placed on lockdown and an officer was posted at the nearby child care facility. Several Injured In Accident Involving Uwharrie Charter School Bus [UPDATED]

ASHEBORO NC - A driver and three children are at the hospital this morning after an accident involving a school bus in Davidson County. According to the NC Highway Patrol the accident occured at around 7:30 AM on Highway 109 near Mount Zion Church Road. Troopers say it appears that a driver crossed the center line and struck a school bus for Uwharrie Charter Academy head on. Seven children were on the bus at the time of the crash, and three of those were taken to the hospital, and are with family at this time. The driver of the passenger car was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Troopers have cleared the scene and Hwy 109 is back open at this time. The water main break caused a 5ft sinkhole to form at the base of the tower. That sinkhole formed directly under a cell tower utility building which caused it to fall into the hole. Photo by: Acme News Archive ASHEBORO NC - A suspect with active warrants was able to elude police after a short vehicle chase Thursday afternoon. According to a police report from the Asheboro Police Department an officer stopped a white Toyota Rav4 at the intersection of Dublin St and Parkview. The officer reported that the driver was known to have a warrant for his arrest. When the officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle the suspect instead step off leading officers on a short vehicle chase before bailing out on foot on Kemp Blvd. Officers searched the area but were unable to located the suspect, No injuries were reported.

ASHEBORO NC - On Tuesday September 14th, just after Noon the Asheboro Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial fire at the Central Gymnasium in Asheboro. When they arrived the saw smoke coming from the building but according to Capt Joines with the Asheboro Fire Dept instead of fire they found vandalism. According to Asst Chief Brown with the Asheboro Police Dept evidence and witnesses pointed to several juveniles breaking out the panel at the front of the gym and setting off two fire extinguishers inside the gym. A CSI detective responded to the scene and collected the extinguishers so they could be processed. Asst Chief Brown says the case has been assigned to a detective.
